Basic Sciences for Core Medical Training and the MRCP

Providing a clear explanation of the relevant medical science behind the individual medical specialties, Basic Science for Core Medical Training and the MRCP, is an indispensable part of a candidate’s MRCP preparation. Directly linked to the Royal College exam, the book follows the same systems-based approach as the syllabus for accurate and effective revision.

With full coverage of basic science for the medical specialities, the book features material on genetics, cellular, molecular and membrane biology, and biochemistry. Content is presented in an illustrated and easy-to-read format, ensuring that the basic science for each medical specialty is more approachable and accessible. A focus on how the basic sciences aid understanding of clinical practice is reinforced through key tables of differential diagnoses and pharmacology.

Ten multiple choice questions at the end of each chapter consolidate learning and enable candidates to test their knowledge. The book also covers common examination errors and areas of misunderstanding to aid learning and help candidates avoid common pitfalls.

The first thing you may notice about this book is how well its laid out. Covering all the major topics, from cell biology to endocrinology, the book moves logically through the systems and specialties, covering all the basic knowledge you could ask for, in as simple terms as possible. (MedSaint, University of St Andrews) This Basic Sciences for Core Medical Training and the MRCP book is a must read book for every aspirant. Highly commended in the Basic & Clinical Sciences category of the British Medical Association Book Awards 2016.

The Author

He has published over 60 peer reviewed original research articles and reviews, and is co-author of the textbooks “Basic Science for Core Medical Training” (highly commended at the BMA Book Awards 2016) and “Levick’s Introduction to Cardiovascular Physiology”.

User Reviews

  1. This is a good book to act as a first pass reminder of what you learned in medical school. I found myself realising it didn’t go into much detail about important aspects of physiology and I had to go look it up in old text books. Ill use it
  2. Excellent revision-focused textbook that emphasises the links between basic science and clinical medicine. Its succinct style and clear explanations make this book an efficient learning resource. The tables are especially good as they cover everything you need to know about each topic in a clear, easy-to-learn format. The book is set to cover basic medical science at the level of the MRCP, but would also be really useful for interested clinical medical students or doctors at other levels.

User Reviews for Deja Review Series Books PDF

Listed below are some of the user reviews for the Deja Book Series PDF.

  1. As I mentioned in other reviews of the Deja Review series, I am a huge fan of these books and used them extensively in my Step 1 preparation. I read the pathology book cover to cover, and found that it was a good adjunct to my 1st tier resources (FA, Goljan, qBanks). It covers most of the major concepts in pathology, and is a quick and easy way to test and increase your fund of rote knowledge.
  2. Great to use throughout medical school to memorize the little facts before an exam after you’ve gotten the theory down. Also, helps in refreshing a little bit before the step. While I think firecracker and first aid are better uses of my time, I would also find myself grabbing this from time to time to get down key points and facts over an organ system that might have been giving me a bit of trouble or I hadn’t seen in a while. Highly recommend.
  3. Great, rapid review of the high yield concepts in neuroscience. Saved my life and I highly recommend this book! You won’t be disapointed.
  4. This is certainly not the best way to learn physiology, but it is a great review of you already do know it and need to brush up on the subject.

Description of First Aid for the USMLE Step 1 2018 PDF 28th Edition

This is an outstanding comprehensive update. the 2017 version and the 2017 to 2018 update is much more drastic than 2016 to 2017 was. There are updates to a large number of images and tables. An example is the glaucoma drugs that are now nicely fit into a table unlike in the 2017 version. There are also updates that have been found in the 2018 version that have annotated into the 2017 version from UWorld. The infant/child development chart is now in its appropriate place, the reproductive section rather than public health sciences as in 2017. These are only but a few examples and there are many such changes and updates. A great and welcome update to an already amazing resource.

User Reviews

  1. Use this book as a way to check off the things that you need to learn – it should not be used as a primary source for your learning. As you go through topics in school, take notes in the relevant sections in First Aid. Watch Osmosis, Kaplan, DIT, Boards and Beyond, etc. and annotate throughout first and second year of medical school. Use Sketchy and annotate the book too.
  2. One of the single best board prep resources around. I had the 2016 version prior to purchasing the new 2018 version and there is so much added content. The pages are sturdy and smooth to write on. The pictures are vibrant. I love love love this book.

Principles and Techniques of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology 7th Edition PDF download

In designing the content of this latest edition we continued our previous policy of placing emphasis on the recommendations we have received from colleagues and academics outside our university. Above all, we have attempted to respond to the invaluable feedback from student users of our book both in the UK and abroad. In this seventh edition we have retained all 16 chapters from the previous edition. All have been appropriately updated to reflect recent developments in their fields, as exemplified by the inclusion of a section on stem cells in the cell culture chapter. Three of these chapters have new authors and have been completely rewritten. Robert Burns, Scottish Agricultural Science Agency, Edinburgh has written the chapter on immunochemical techniques, and Andreas Hofmann, Eskitis Institute of Molecular Therapies, Griffith University, Brisbane, Australia has written the two chapters on spectroscopic techniques. We are delighted to welcome both authors to our team of contributors. In addition to these changes of authors, two new chapters have been added to the book. Our decision taken for the sixth edition to include a section on the biochemical principles underlying clinical biochemistry has been well received and so we have extended our coverage of the subject and have devoted a whole chapter (16) to this subject. Written in collaboration with Dr John Fyffe, Consultant Biochemist, Royal Hospital for Sick Children, Yorkhill, Glasgow, new topics that are discussed in the chapter include the diagnosis and management of kidney disease, diabetes, endocrine disorders including thyroid dysfunction, conditions of the hypothalamus–pituitary– adrenal axis such as pregnancy, and pathologies of plasma proteins such as myeloma. Case studies are included to illustrate how the principles discussed apply to the diagnosis and treatment of individual patients with the conditions.
