My wife is responsible for nursing education at a major teaching hospital and she is very impressed with this text book. It is clear, well presented and thorough. It is at the standard of most of the standard texts using in nursing and is quite a weighty tome.

It contains all of the current thinking on nurse practise and gives you links to websites so that you can see what the latest thinking is on many topics (nursing care is not a static subject). It will act as a good reference for those entering nursing practise for the many assignments and portfolios you have to put together and help experienced nurses stay current.

Got this for a friend who has just entered into the world of nursing as a trainee mid-wife. She was very grateful to receive this and has told me she’s been using it for the many many assignments that she has to do on top of working some long hours. From looking through it, as a teacher, its got a good balance of method, application and diagrams in clear set sections that read really easily. Its weighty, but then it to support those people have to carry so much info in their head on a daily basis and made good informed decisions too. A good book.

This weighty tome is pretty comprehensive and should serve any trainee nurse very well, covering all aspects of conditions/situations regarding diagnosis, treatments and aftercare. Plenty of information in each section with good graphs. Expertly written by those in the know and worth investing in this book as it would definitely prove to be a vital resource for medical knowledge. Each section is well thought out.

Well laid out and constructed with lots of additional advice and cross-referencing.

A concise yet comprehensive textbook, ‘Nursing Practice: Knowledge and Care’ is a paperback (slightly smaller than A4) book, with a clear layout and accessible yet detailed content. The book is of interest to people working in related fields, not just nursing students (care assistants, for example), and is very well presented.

Oxford Handbook of Clinical and Laboratory Investigation 4th Edition PDF Free Download

It is a fact of life that the sophisticated automated analysers in current use are not 100% accurate 100% of the time, but they come pretty close. In order to keep errors to a minimum, precautions need to be taken when sampling biological material, e.g. blood. Minimizing spurious results using blood samples • Use correct bottle. • Fill to line (if anticoagulant used). This is less of a worry when vacuum sample bottles are used since these should take in exactly the correct amount of blood, ensuring the correct blood:anticoagulant ratio. This is critical for coagulation tests. • Try to get the sample to the laboratory as quickly as possible. Blood samples left lying around on warm windowsills, or even overnight at room temperature, will produce bizarre results, e.g. crenated red blood cells (RBCs) and abnormal- looking white blood cells (WBCs) in old EDTA samples. • Try to avoid rupturing red cells when taking the sample (e.g. using narrow- gauge needle, prolonged time to collect whole sample); otherwise a ‘haemolysed’ sample will be received by the laboratory. This may cause spurious results for some parameters (e.g. [K+]). • Remember to mix (not shake) samples containing anticoagulant. Variations in normal ranges in health As discussed earlier, most of the normal ranges for blood parameters discussed in this book are for non- pregnant adults. The reason for this is that blood values, e.g. haemoglobin (Hb), red cell count (RCC), are high in the newborn and many full blood count (FBC), coagulation, and other parameters undergo changes in pregnancy.

Psychiatry 2 Volume Set 4th Edition PDF

Psychiatry 2 Volume Set 4th Edition PDF Free Download

In the two decades since work began on the first edition of Psychiatry, the transformation of our field has gained increasing momentum. Our understanding of the microstructure and function of the brain, and of the genetic controls of the brain reveals ever more amazing information which has already begun to transform clinical practice and psychiatric education. Further, the changes in the ways we have access to information have led to dramatic improvement of accessibility to our growing knowledge base. Yet, the clinical core of our discipline remains the imperative to integrate the best of our humanistic traditions with our cutting-edge scientific advances. And, in spite of the fast pace of change, this challenge remains the organizing heart of the information in this present edition. The value of our approach in Psychiatry is reflected by the acceptance of the global community of psychiatrists, which has led to it becoming a leading reference text around the world. This edition is marked not only by extensive revision of all chapters, and by the addition of many new chapters, but also by another major restructuring of the book. We now have added new sections, reflecting both the expansion of our knowledge base, and what we believe will be a more useful organization of the material, especially in the areas of the collaborative care and psychosomatic medicine and emergency and crisis intervention psychiatry.
With all the revising and restructuring though, our approach continues to emphasize an integrative biopsychosocial philosophy in both understanding psychopathology and providing treatment. And, as always, we hold to the view that the context of our understanding and intervention remains the therapeutic alliance we develop and maintain with our patients. You also will see that we have changed our panel of section editors and editors, reflecting both the breadth of the field, and the increasingly international scope of our work. Our newest editor is Professor Michelle Riba, and internationally known expert in psychosomatic medicine, psycho-oncology, and collaborative care who now serves in leadership in the World Psychiatric Association and the Pacific Rim College of Psychiatrists.

Pocket Tutor Clinical Examination PDF

Pocket Tutor Clinical Examination PDF Free Download

Proficiency in history-taking and clinical examination is fundamental to good clinical practice. To acquire it, you will require practical skills and a thorough understanding of the systems of the body. You will also need to be able to work in partnership with your patients, listening to their concerns and respecting their individuality and dignity. Pocket Tutor Clinical Examination helps you develop this wide range of skills. The first two chapters outline the general principles of structuring a consultation, taking a history and conducting an examination. Approaches to forming a differential diagnosis and following up a consultation are included, along with ethicolegal considerations and a summary of the relevance of evidence-based medicine to clinical skills.
Ten systems-based chapters then follow, each one starting with a recap of key anatomy and physiology before describing system-specific symptoms and signs. Subsequent discussion of clinical examination guides you through the most commonly used techniques. Each systems chapter closes with a summary of common investigations likely to be requested as a result of positive examination findings, along with a summary table. Some patient groups require special approaches to history and examination, for example because of communication difficulties or age-related characteristics. Accordingly we devote the final three chapters to children, the elderly and critically ill patients. We hope this book helps you develop the skills you will need to be a first class clinician.

Pain Medicine An Interdisciplinary Case-Based Approach PDF

Pain Medicine An Interdisciplinary Case-Based Approach PDF Free Download

Although it is no secret that chronic pain is a major healthcare problem of epidemic proportions, its management is far from perfect. In the United States, chronic pain has an estimated prevalence of greater that 30% and is one of the main reasons for seeking medical care. The direct and indirect economic costs of chronic pain are astronomical. Chronic pain is challenging not only because of complex pathophysiological processes but also because it affects all facets of life: physical, emotional, psychological, economic, and social. Hence, many experts consider chronic pain not a mere symptom but a disease entity in itself. This constellation poses particular challenges in the management of chronic pain and requires integration of multiple, and often simultaneous, approaches to optimize patient outcomes.
Interdisciplinary clinical medicine involves bringing together the input of multiple healthcare specialists of different backgrounds in the care of complex patients. Patients benefit from the contribution of experts from different clinical backgrounds who address their problems in an integrated and concurrent fashion. The resultant comprehensive patient care may be more successful at managing and solving patient problems that are beyond the proficiency and training of a single provider. The benefits, however, are not limited to the patients. Clinicians learn from the cross-pollination of knowledge and exchange of clinical experiences and skills. This concept has been embraced in medical education, and particularly in pain medicine. Indeed, the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) has mandated multidisciplinary training of fellows in accredited programs in pain medicine since 2007. Greater exposure of trainees to the disciplines of neurology, physical medicine and rehabilitation, and psychiatry/psychology, in addition to anesthesiology is now routine. Innovation in educational experience is highly encouraged, including training in cancer pain, palliative care, and pediatric pain. Specific training requirements are also delineated for the interventional track trainees. Interdisciplinary medicine, although ideal, may be difficult to practice. Team members must learn to appreciate the differing perspectives and accede to work with each other.

EMQs in Clinical Medicine 2nd Edition PDF

EMQs in Clinical Medicine 2nd Edition PDF Free Download

EMQs are a popular method of assessing how broad a knowledge of medicine an undergraduate has acquired. They can, however, be difficult to prepare for, and the best way to build understanding and confidence is with practice. Presenting 100 key EMQs covering the core areas of medicine and surgery, care had been taken by the authors to structure the questions and answers so that they reflect accurately the themes uncountered during study and, specifically, in final exams. Each subject covered is accompanied by a revision section which summarises key points and cross references them to other questions for revision purposes. Questions related to pharmacology, an area which many students find particularly challenging, are threaded throughout the book where relevant, mirroring the integrated teaching methods common to most medical schools.
The second edition of EMQs in Clinical Medicine has been thoroughly revised and updated to reflect medical developments, while retaining the clear and comprehensive approach and popular revision boxes of its predecessor. The authors’ first-hand experience of EMQ-based examinations, and awareness of the importance of reliable and accurate revision guides to medical students, ensure EMQs in Clinical Medicine remains and invaluable resource for all medical students undertaking the clinical part of their training, and an ideal companion during finals preparation.
