Microbiology is the study of tiny organisms that cause disease. These microorganisms are gathered under the umbrella term of microbiology, which also includes the study of their interactions with their host organisms. Microbiology is a foundational science that helps us to understand how infections occur, how to treat them, and how to prevent them in the future.
Microbiology can be broken down into four core disciplines: bacteriology, virology, mycology, and parasitology. Each discipline has its own set of core knowledge and specific methods for studying microorganisms. However, all four disciplines rely on basic principles that are common to all microorganisms. These principles include cell structure and function, genetics and molecular biology, biochemistry, and microbiology techniques.
The author introduces her unique “S.M.A.R.T.” problem-solving framework (Summarize known and unknown, Make connections, Avoid distractors, Read and re-read, Thoroughly answer) that helps students tackle clinical cases online and throughout the book. This textbook is the first on the market written to align with the American Society of Microbiology’s nursing-centric learning outcomes, as well as NCLEX learning outcomes, and emphasizes topics that are medically relevant. The author’s conversational writing style employs accessible analogies and humor to engage students in their reading, while the artwork incorporates new research-based learning design principles to focus learners on what is truly important.
Online videos of clinical cases, tutorials, and animations coach students through tough concepts in Mastering™ Microbiology, complementing Microbiology: Basic and Clinical Principles and helping students think clinically and critically.

The Authors
Dr. Norman-McKay earned her B.S. in microbiology and cell science from the University of Florida and her Ph.D. in biochemistry and molecular biology from the Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine. She completed a postdoctoral fellowship in microbiology and immunology at Penn State College of Medicine, where she was awarded a National Institutes of Health Fellowship to study the role of viruses in cancer. In addition to being an author, she has 18 years of experience teaching a wide range of general sciences such as biology, virology, biochemistry, microbiology, anatomy and physiology, and clinical genetics to students at all levels––from freshman to post graduates. And, in 2016, her peers and students recognized her with the Outstanding Faculty Award at Florida State College at Jacksonville, where she is currently a full-time professor. Dr. Norman-McKay has also served as a dean over science programs, drafted curricula for STEM programs, and served as a subject matter expert for the Florida Space Research Institute. Most recently she was invited by the U.S. Department of State to visit Central Asia as a guest speaker on STEM education, promoting innovation, and encouraging women in STEM.

Cristian Piceno “Perfect condition! The book is in better condition than stated very happy with this purchase !”
Student “I’m using this book in class right now. Usually I hate reading textbooks but this one is like the author is just talking to you. The diagrams are really helpful to learn. I want to be a nurse and this book makes a lot of connections to medical stuff. I took chemistry a while ago so I really like the chem notes that are in the book. The interactive questions that come with the book also helped me in class.”
Amazon Customer “Hard to follow concepts in the book because it seems to be vocabulary driven rather than illustrating topics.”
Michelle Wiciak “I’m a second-year medical student who does not typically read textbooks cover-to-cover. But Robbins Pathology is definitely a textbook I read through because not only is it easy to understand difficult medical concepts, but the authors throw in fun comments. It does an amazing job integrating cell biology, histology, biochemistry, and anatomy with disease pathologies. Although it is a relatively longer textbook, it provides chock full of information that pops up on multiple question banks (UWorld, Amboss, Kaplan). I plan on using this book to study for the Pathology NBME, as well as the NBME comprehensive and STEP1.”
