Preface

This is the first edition of the book without any of the original authors: Tony Hope and Murray Longmore. Both have now moved to other things and enjoy a well-deserved break from authorship.

In this book, I am accompanied by a nephrologist, a gastroenterologist and people in training for a career in cardiology, dermatology, and general practice. Five doctors, experience and styles. When combined with that of our specialist and youth readers, I hope that this generates a book that is greater than the sum of its parts, but that is faithful to the original concept and the spirit of the original authors.

Life and medicine have advanced in the 30 years since the first edition was published, but medicine and science are largely iterative; The novel discoveries, “innovators” or “that change the practices” are rare, to quote Isaac Newton: “If I have seen more, it is on the shoulders of giants”.

Therefore, when we decided to write this edition, we were inspired by the original book and its authors; Update, add and clarify, but try to preserve the feeling and perspective that the OHCM has provided to the generations of trained and clinical.
