Not good enough as a main paeds textbook for medical students. Important and common conditions are either not explained in nearly enough detail or have no mention at all! Very disappointed as the Respiratory textbook was excellent.

4.0 out of 5 stars A potentially useful title covering Paediatrics for the medical student
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 27 February 2015
As a medical student I have a particular interest in Paediatrics as a future career. I have found this title to be a potentially useful title for medical students but with some caveats.

Caveat 1: In my opinion this shouldn’t be your first/only Paediatrics title that you purchase for use at medical school, it would be more appropriate to get other titles from this publisher such as Rudolfh Paediatrics and Child Health or Paediatrics at a Glance or from Elsevier with Illustrated Paediatrics. Rudolfh Paediatrics title is particularly useful as it contains useful summaries, diagrams and copies of boxes from Paediatrics at a Glance to allow the student to learn stuff to the level required but also to allow them to quickly revise what they have done.

Caveat 2: This title doesn’t have as many diagrams in it as some of those that I have discussed above so if you are a visual learner then you would be better suited to get one of the others that I have mentioned.

Caveat 3: If you find the LN series to be useful then this title will not disappoint you and would be worth getting.

In conclusion, this title is a useful discourse on Paediatrics, giving you the depth of knowledge that you would be expected to be conversant with. However I would warn that it is most useful for the non-visual learner as these students would be better suited by one of the other titles mentioned. Why not get a copy from your university library to see whether it suites you.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product( What’s this? )
This book is an amazing exposition of all things Paediatric. It’s a pleasure to hold; a perfect weight in one’s hands and the gloss/laminate panel that encircles the cover, giving one a sense of delight: more than a hint of the sheer amazement that it contains within.

In truth I have been a firm devotee of the Lecture Notes series since I was a medical student, and volumes such as the Lecture Notes on Clinical Medicine and Surgery, in particular, I am sure, got me through finals. This being said my 3rd edition (!) Lecture Notes on Paediatrics was always something of a disappointment- for whether one intends to be a Paediatrician or not, one cannot, ever, desert this most crucial and important speciality. The book on Paediatrics whilst worthy enough seemed to lack the ‘knock-out’ essence of some of the other titles.

I remember as a young medical student admitting a very poorly young teenager with chickenpox; her life suddenly threatened by a local GP, who for some inexplicable and negligent reason, decided to put her on a course of oral steroids. It brought it home to me just how vital was the study of children, for they could be plunged more quickly than any other group into life-threatening territory, either by a serious condition, or some doctor who was not up to speed.

This book, at a stroke, banishes all the deficiencies I found in my 3rd edition (which I still have!) It is beautifully, succinctly, yet accurately written with precise placing of every word and every fact. There are some excellent illustrations and graphics, with an array of essential information that just keeps on coming. The use of colour is superb and though my days of the OSCE are over (my medical school used to call them the Viva Voce) I found that it was just one of the many objects contained within its glorious pages that drew my eye and focussed my mind.

Paediatricians ( along with A&E specialists) are one group of doctors that I admire ( next to GPs) the most, for they, just like we GPs have to retain and remain more than conversant with facts about the whole human body; and I often tell my patients these days that super-specialised consultants know more and more about less and less. By this I mean, of course, they have a very narrow, but detailed band of expertise rather than one with width.

So, as you might expect from my words, this book has a width and a depth like no other and if the Amazon voting system would allow me to award it ten stars, then I would. My only regret is that I am going to have to hide it from my medical student daughter, or buy another copy, as this book, I know, I’ll never want to be without. With my sincere thanks.
