Basic Sciences for Core Medical Training and the MRCP

Providing a clear explanation of the relevant medical science behind the individual medical specialties, Basic Science for Core Medical Training and the MRCP, is an indispensable part of a candidate’s MRCP preparation. Directly linked to the Royal College exam, the book follows the same systems-based approach as the syllabus for accurate and effective revision.

With full coverage of basic science for the medical specialities, the book features material on genetics, cellular, molecular and membrane biology, and biochemistry. Content is presented in an illustrated and easy-to-read format, ensuring that the basic science for each medical specialty is more approachable and accessible. A focus on how the basic sciences aid understanding of clinical practice is reinforced through key tables of differential diagnoses and pharmacology.

Ten multiple choice questions at the end of each chapter consolidate learning and enable candidates to test their knowledge. The book also covers common examination errors and areas of misunderstanding to aid learning and help candidates avoid common pitfalls.

The first thing you may notice about this book is how well its laid out. Covering all the major topics, from cell biology to endocrinology, the book moves logically through the systems and specialties, covering all the basic knowledge you could ask for, in as simple terms as possible. User Reviews

  1. This is a good book to act as a first pass reminder of what you learned in medical school. I found myself realising it didn’t go into much detail about important aspects of physiology and I had to go look it up in old text books. Ill use it
  2. Excellent revision-focused textbook that emphasises the links between basic science and clinical medicine. Its succinct style and clear explanations make this book an efficient learning resource. The tables are especially good as they cover everything you need to know about each topic in a clear, easy-to-learn format. The book is set to cover basic medical science at the level of the MRCP, but would also be really useful for interested clinical medical students or doctors at other levels.

Editorial Reviews

‘It is absolutely excellent and I shall recommend it strongly to the participants at all my MRCP courses.’ Geraint James MA, MD, FRCP – Visiting Professor of Medicine. ‘This book distills the most relevant facts in an easy-to-read format. If you are preparing for MRCP Part 1 and you have little time (like most of us), you definitely need this book.

The best revision book for the MRCP. Its both concise and comprehensive, whereas most books tend to be one at the expense of the other. Highly recommended. (PASTEST)

User Reviews

Well written and comprehensive book. Good for some revision while studying, but not just before the actual exam.
However, this would not be very useful if you sit the exam in the currant format.
Some chapters (for example, the one on statistics) would need a work up.
The quality of printing and biding is good. Would last for a few years without a doubt.
If I am very honest, you could better invest your money on online resources done by leading companies.
Actually there are very few books which would help in the MRCP Part 1 and all have been superseded by online resources.

Description of Oxford Handbook of Clinical Medicine 10th Edition

Like many other students I use the book as a quick reference/recall and revision tool, and for that it is (for lack of a better word) perfect. Every medical student in their clinical years should own one of these, and I think most of them already do! If you dont you are missing out. * Paddy Green, almostadoctor.co.uk * THE best book that a medical student could ever use. Everything is so easy to find, and is just enough depth for me! * Alexander Wibberley, 3rd year medical student, University of Leeds * I very much appreciated the very human and caring aspect it brings to clinical medicine, it’s lovely to have the dry, biomedical material broken up with humorous, motivational and touching stories. * Sam Siljee, University of Otago, New Zealand * Incredibly helpful in almost all situations, information well laid out and easy to find, engaging to read … useful asides to aid memorisation, essential algorithms/reference intervals helpfully situated on front and back inside covers; a generally excellent and clearly very well-thought-out book. * Tom Dalton, University of Birmingham, UK * Review from previous edition The bees’ knees of medicine. . . A brilliant all-round book. * The Student Room *

  1. Really like this book. Contains lots and lots of information. It’s a very thick book and has a lot of content in it so I’m not sure how useful it is on wards since it would be tedious to look every little detail up. But it’s definitely worth getting to read up on things to review at home.
It’s a pretty thick book with small font and cramped wording. So if you don’t like things so tiny then this might not be for you. The pages are not glossy unlike other books. The binding seems a bit flimsy but time will tell how well it holds.
  2. I have only 2 complaints:
    – text layout makes the book difficult to read
    – there are no pharmacology, psychiatry and intensive care chapters while we all need them so bad
Everything else about “Oxford Handbook Of Clinical Medicine” is just perfect.

User Reviews
Reviewing the new, 4th edition:
Got this book to study for Step 2 CK with about 3 weeks before the exam.
Pros:
-Easy to read
-High-yield information in boxes on the side
-Logical groupings of diagnoses together
-Common pitfalls of students outlined
Cons:
-Seems geared towards the average test-taker. If you are gunning for a high score, this book does NOT include a lot of the more esoteric material. Specifically, multiple questions in the newest NBME cannot be answered by looking at this book
-Inconsistent level of detail for certain diagnoses. Too much for some, too little for others
-Paucity of mnemonics or memory aids

Office-Based Rhinology Principles and Techniques PDF »

Office-Based Rhinology Principles and Techniques PDF Free Download

As otolaryngology has moved toward minimally invasive procedures in every subspecialty, there has been a parallel trend to perform these procedures in the office setting, when possible. Physicians and patients alike can derive benefits from moving procedures from the hospital operating room to the office exam room. Physicians have more flexibility in scheduling, delays associated with staff shift changes and equipment turnover are eliminated, time can be used more efficiently, and more patients can be seen. Patients are more comfortable in a familiar environment, require less time away from their regular schedules, have decreased anesthesia requirements, are not exposed to hospital acquired infectious organisms, and often have a lower insurance copay for officebased procedures.
In this text, we cover the foundation of knowledge a surgeon must have to prepare for office-based procedures, including anatomy, radiology, and basic endoscopic skills. We review the basic preparatory steps involved such as proper patient selection, room setup, and local anesthetic techniques, and then present multiple rhinologic procedures that can be performed in the office setting. We have asked expert rhinologists across the subspecialty to share their techniques in this text, and we thank them for their excellent contributions. We have also compiled a DVD of selected surgical procedures to help the reader obtain a more complete and thorough understanding of these procedures. We hope this book will educate surgeons at all stages of their career, whether otolaryngology residents or those who have been practicing for many years, and allow them to develop a new and fulfilling aspect of their practice as otolaryngologists.
