Muscle and Exercise Physiology PDF

Human exercise physiology has a long history of research dating back to the pioneering works carried out at the beginning of the 20th century by the research teams of Archibald Vivian Hill and Schack August Steenberg Krogh (August Krogh)—Nobel Prize winners in Physiology or Medicine. Some of their fundamental discoveries concerning exercise physiology, such as the concept of oxygen uptake kinetics and oxygen deficit, are still valid and constitute a background and challenge for deeper understanding of muscle energetics and human physiology. At that time, some other crucial discoveries in muscle physiology were reported, notably the force-velocity relationship proposed by A.V. Hill and the concept of the motor unit as a population of muscle fibers activated by a common nerve, proposed by Sir Charles Scott Sherrington—Nobel Prize winner in Physiology or Medicine. These discoveries are among the most important achievements in this area of research. However, one more theory has been of fundamental importance for our understanding of muscle and exercise physiology, namely the sliding filament theory of muscle contraction postulated in 1954 in Nature, independently by two teams of scientists: Sir Andrew F. Huxley (Nobel Prize winner in Physiology or Medicine) and Rolf Niedergerke on the one hand, and Hugh Huxley and Jean Hanson, on the other hand. The studies concerning human exercise physiology carried out at the beginning of the 20th century were originally associated almost exclusively with physical exercise capacity of healthy people and athletes. At this point, it is worth mentioning Henry Briggs for his studies of exercise tolerance of industrial workers (miners) and athletes as early as in 1920. He was the first to use the time course of expired CO2 during graded exercise as the criteria of the so called “crest point”—the predecessor of the “anaerobic” or, more appropriately, the lactate and gas exchange thresholds.

Netter’s Physiology Flash Cards PDF

Netter’s Physiology Flash Cards PDF Free Download

As a naturally integrative fi eld of study, physiology cannot readily be learned by simple memorization or repetitive study of lecture notes or texts. Most students fi nd that the best understanding of this fi eld comes when multiple learning modalities are utilized. While we recommend that students of physiology start with a standard textbook such as Netter’s Essential Physiology, many will fi nd that they desire additional learning materials. With this in mind, this set of over 200 cards has been developed to be used in conjunction with textbooks, lectures, and problem sets to cover topics in each of the major areas of physiology: cell physiology, neurophysiology, cardiovascular physiology, respiratory physiology, renal physiology, gastrointestinal physiology, and endocrinology. From the basic physiology and anatomy of these systems to their complex, integrative processes, Netter’s Physiology Flash Cards provides a visually rich platform for testing one’s knowledge of physiology and developing a deeper understanding of physiological concepts. Medical students, allied health students, and undergraduate students taking an advanced course in human physiology will enhance their knowledge of physiology by working with these cards.

Clinical Arrhythmology and Electrophysiology 3rd Edition PDF

Clinical Arrhythmology and Electrophysiology 3rd Edition PDF : A Companion to Braunwald’s Heart Disease Free Download

The third edition of Clinical Arrhythmology and Electrophysiology maintains its unique style, written by just the three of us. Once again, we can “explain, integrate, coordinate, and educate in a comprehensive, cohesive fashion while avoiding redundancies and contradictions.” We liken it to a comprehensive travel guide written by an expert who has actually stayed in that unique hotel or eaten in that special restaurant. We have experienced the progress first-hand, from basic science to clinical application, and are able to pass on our experiences to you. In addition, as before, readers have the opportunity to delve deeper into basic mechanisms or invasive procedures…or not…depending on the level of interest. We have thoroughly revised and updated all chapters. In addition, we have greatly expanded the book by increasing the total number of pages from 700 to over 1100 and increased the number of figures to almost 1000 in print and over 200 online. A unique feature of our book are 74 new videos that take the reader into our electrophysiology labs to become a “fly on the wall” observing electrophysiology procedures. We believe the adage that “one picture is worth a thousand words,” and we invite you to learn with us during actual procedures. Our textbook, written as a companion to the Braunwald’s Heart Disease series, is for learners of all stages. We hope you enjoy, learn, and expand your care of arrhythmia patients.
