I hope that it is an enjoyable and useful read. THE IMPACT OF DIABETES The condition diabetes mellitus may have been in existence for more than three thousand years. The two forms of diabetes were first described in the fifth century AD, one occurring in slim individuals who perished quickly (Type 1 diabetes) and the other in older overweight people who survived for longer (Type 2 diabetes). By the end of the nineteenth century, Langerhans from Berlin had described small clusters of cells (islets of Langerhans) in the pancreas gland that were later found to be responsible for the production of a glucose-lowering hormone. The greatest break – through in the management of diabetes occurred in 1921 when insulin was discovered at the University of Toronto by the surgeon Frederick Banting and his student Charles Best. This led to insulin being manufactured and used for the treatment of diabetes. Diabetes mellitus is a condition in which there is a persistent elevation of blood glucose concentration. It can be caused by reduced insulin action and/or insufficient amounts of insulin. The two main types of diabetes are Type 1 diabetes (previously called insulindependent diabetes mellitus [IDDM] or juvenile onset diabetes) and Type 2 diabetes (previously called noninsulin dependent diabetes mellitus [NIDDM] or maturity-onset diabetes).

And where data are controversial or contradictory, we similarly highlight these key points. This can be viewed as a societal manufacture of the ingredients of treatment resistance, as it fosters episode recurrence, stressor accumulation, and the acquisition of substance abuse, as well as medical comorbidities. Each of these (stressors, episodes, and substances) tend to sensitize (show increased reactivity upon recurrence) to themselves and cross-sensitize to the others such that they interact and further propel illness evolution toward treatment resistance and premature disability, cognitive dysfunction, and loss of years of life expectancy.

This is first and foremost a medical textbook – it’s written and designed for those studying. It’s therefore forgivable for not being the easiest read, as it’s not aimed at the layman. Medical jargon packed, and proper terms of use are used to describe bone structures and symptoms – it’s clinical, so a previous degree of clinical knowledge is required.
It’s largely focused on initial assessments of orthopaedic traumas. Foot issues, problems arising at birth, and chronic changes when first presented are mostly what are covered. It’s half a guide, half a textbook, with before and after scans of surgery and explanations of where bone traumas can exist and what defines them as so.
A well designed and useful book for clinical practice.

Not being a doctor myself I still found the book interesting and intriguing.

This is a very good quality and well produced resource book intended to help with better understanding the diagnosis, treatment and management of orthopaedic conditions which is perfect for students studying orthopaedics (specific routes or general student doctors/nurses), physiotherapists, sports physicians and other healthcare professionals. Much of this is focused on assessing an orthopedic condition initially and the book is incredibly helpful on that front with tons of diagrams, illustrations, x-rays, scans and photos to support the written text. Through this and the 24 very well laid out and indexed chapters the book is very user friendly and it’s easy to head straight to a specific body part or issue. A brilliant resource for any healthcare professional exposed to musculoskeletal/orthopaedic related disorders.

The book has a semi-hardback, flexible, glossy cover and has 215-pages of x-rays, scan, diagrams, photos (some not for the fainthearted) and information. It’s broken down into a total of 24 chapters covering such things as Orthopaedic Trauma, Management of Adult Fractures, Orthopaedic Procedures, etc and chapters on most areas of the body.
It’s well written and, for a lay-man, pretty easy to understand and follow. All the imagery is great, some a bit gory, but I personally like that.

FLIPPING THE CLASSROOM A recent trend in science education is the phenomenon that is sometimes called “flipping the classroom.” This phrase refers to the idea that some of the activities that used to be done in class are now done outside of class, and vice versa.
For example, instead of spending the entire class time lecturing over textbook and other materials, some of the class time is spent engaging students in various activities, such as problem solving, working through case studies, and designing experiments. This approach is called active learning. For many instructors, the classroom has become more learner centered rather teacher centered. A learner-centered classroom provides a rich environment in which students can interact with each other and with their instructors. Instructors and fellow students often provide formative assessment—immediate feedback that helps each student understand if his or her learning is on the right track. What are some advantages of active learning? Educational studies reveal that active learning usually promotes greater learning gains. In addition, active learning often focuses on skill development rather than on the memorization of facts that are easily forgotten. Students become trained to “think like scientists” and to develop a skill set that enables them to apply scientific reasoning. A common concern among instructors who are beginning to try out active learning is that they think they will have less time to teach and therefore will cover less material. However, this may not be the case.
Our goal is to explain the molecular basis of life at the cellular level. We use evolution and molecular structures to provide the context for understanding the dynamic mechanisms that support life. As research in cell biology advances quickly, the field may appear to grow more complex, but we aim to show that understanding cells actually becomes simpler as new general principles emerge and more precise molecular mechanisms replace vague concepts about biological processes. For this edition, we revised the entire book, taking the reader to the frontiers of knowledge with exciting new information on every topic. We start with new insights about the evolution of eukaryotes, followed by macromolecules and research methods, including recent breakthroughs in light and electron microscopy. We begin the main part of the book with a section on basic molecular biology before sections on membranes, organelles, membrane traffic, signaling, adhesion and extracellular matrix, and cytoskeleton and cellular motility.

Our coverage of most topics begins with an introduction to the molecular hardware and finishes with an account of how the various molecules function together in physiological systems. This organization allows for a clearer exposition of the general principles of each class of molecules, since they are treated as a group rather than isolated examples for each biological system. This approach allows us to present the operation of complex processes, such as signaling pathways, as an integrated whole, without diversions to introduce the various components as they appear along the pathway. For example, the section on signaling mechanisms begins with chapters on receptors, cytoplasmic signal transduction proteins, and second messengers, so the reader is prepared to appreciate the dynamics of 10 critical signaling systems in the chapter that concludes the section. Teachers of shorter courses may concentrate on a subset of the examples in these systems chapters, or they may use parts of the “hardware” chapters as reference material.
