It deliberately focuses upon diabetes, a frighteningly common and debilitating condition encountered by all doctors, regardless of specialist interest. Thus, for the most part, the endocrine sections of the book are set out according to the affected gland and the quantity of hormone being produced. The first gives a background understanding of diabetes and a review of glandular systems. The second outlines the disease problems and their investigation, including the specific complications of diabetes. I hope that it is an enjoyable and useful read. THE IMPACT OF DIABETES The condition diabetes mellitus may have been in existence for more than three thousand years. The two forms of diabetes were first described in the fifth century AD, one occurring in slim individuals who perished quickly (Type 1 diabetes) and the other in older overweight people who survived for longer (Type 2 diabetes). By the end of the nineteenth century, Langerhans from Berlin had described small clusters of cells (islets of Langerhans) in the pancreas gland that were later found to be responsible for the production of a glucose-lowering hormone. The greatest break – through in the management of diabetes occurred in 1921 when insulin was discovered at the University of Toronto by the surgeon Frederick Banting and his student Charles Best. This led to insulin being manufactured and used for the treatment of diabetes. Diabetes mellitus is a condition in which there is a persistent elevation of blood glucose concentration. It can be caused by reduced insulin action and/or insufficient amounts of insulin. The two main types of diabetes are Type 1 diabetes (previously called insulindependent diabetes mellitus [IDDM] or juvenile onset diabetes) and Type 2 diabetes (previously called noninsulin dependent diabetes mellitus [NIDDM] or maturity-onset diabetes).

We provide a detailed glossary of terms used in this field, and a summary of key resources, in particular the patient representative bodies and self-help organizations which provide so much assistance to patients and their carers, as well as support for research. In Chapter 1, Parkinson’s disease facts and figures, we offer a logical sequence moving from incidence and prevalence figures and survival data, through to the causes and risk factors associated with the condition, and then on to the genetic and environmental ones. In this chapter we also address rates of progression of Parkinson’s disease, a frequent question by patients and their carers. The reader will find clear summary statements, essentially a ‘mini evidence-based summary’ on this and many points. And where data are controversial or contradictory, we similarly highlight these key points. Lastly, the pathophysiology and neuropathology of Parkinson’s are considered, with a review of mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress.

As such, the book is an invaluable resource to the practicing clinician and clinical investigator, as well as to pharmaceutical entrepreneurs. Given the grave consequences of the treatment-resistant mood disorders outlined here, a variety of major changes in current clinical, public health, educational, and research strategies are in order.
As inferred by the data in this volume, much treatment resistance in the recurrent mood disorders is self-inflicted and iatrogenically facilitated. Initial mood episodes are often either not treated at all or treated inadequately, increasing the likelihood of recurrence and progression. Critically, the idea and ideal of early and sustained pharmacoprophylaxis, widely endorsed by academic society and by virtually every treatment guideline for both unipolar and bipolar disorder, is not well promulgated to the public and all too often fails to be instituted or maintained. This can be viewed as a societal manufacture of the ingredients of treatment resistance, as it fosters episode recurrence, stressor accumulation, and the acquisition of substance abuse, as well as medical comorbidities. Each of these (stressors, episodes, and substances) tend to sensitize (show increased reactivity upon recurrence) to themselves and cross-sensitize to the others such that they interact and further propel illness evolution toward treatment resistance and premature disability, cognitive dysfunction, and loss of years of life expectancy.

This is first and foremost a medical textbook – it’s written and designed for those studying. It’s therefore forgivable for not being the easiest read, as it’s not aimed at the layman. Medical jargon packed, and proper terms of use are used to describe bone structures and symptoms – it’s clinical, so a previous degree of clinical knowledge is required.

It’s largely focused on initial assessments of orthopaedic traumas. Foot issues, problems arising at birth, and chronic changes when first presented are mostly what are covered. It’s half a guide, half a textbook, with before and after scans of surgery and explanations of where bone traumas can exist and what defines them as so.

A well designed and useful book for clinical practice.

This is a very good quality and well produced resource book intended to help with better understanding the diagnosis, treatment and management of orthopaedic conditions which is perfect for students studying orthopaedics (specific routes or general student doctors/nurses), physiotherapists, sports physicians and other healthcare professionals. Much of this is focused on assessing an orthopedic condition initially and the book is incredibly helpful on that front with tons of diagrams, illustrations, x-rays, scans and photos to support the written text. Through this and the 24 very well laid out and indexed chapters the book is very user friendly and it’s easy to head straight to a specific body part or issue. A brilliant resource for any healthcare professional exposed to musculoskeletal/orthopaedic related disorders.

The book has a semi-hardback, flexible, glossy cover and has 215-pages of x-rays, scan, diagrams, photos (some not for the fainthearted) and information. It’s broken down into a total of 24 chapters covering such things as Orthopaedic Trauma, Management of Adult Fractures, Orthopaedic Procedures, etc and chapters on most areas of the body.
It’s well written and, for a lay-man, pretty easy to understand and follow. All the imagery is great, some a bit gory, but I personally like that.
