Editorial Reviews
Review from previous edition: “an excellent summary and guide to neurology, which is both aimed at symptomatic presentation, and disease-based. The book is excellently written, packed with wise clinical points and covers a wide differential diagnostic base…I would recommend it to senior and junior colleages.” –British Journal of Hospital Medicine Jun 2007
“This book will rightly become a staple for those in speciality neuroscience posts, whilst serving clinical medical students and those in their early postgraduate employment equally well. There is just the right level of information to grasp the fundamentals of any disease entity new to the reader, and to refresh those inevitable lacunes in the ever-expanding knowledge base. For those at Consultant level this book will still remain a ready and useful source of information in the clinic.” –Dr Martin R Turner, John Radcliffe Hospital Feb 2007
“As a medical student, I found this book extremely useful throughout my neurology block. Fits into my bag easily, so can just open and read it on the bus. Someone who is a expert in the area may (though I don’t know) find fault, but at my level it gives me what I need at the moment.” –Amazon Customer Reviews Apr 2012

I am a prelim neurology resident. I bought this book to go briefly and quickly over the main neurology subjects before I start my residency. I find it very successful in presenting the main points of different topics in an easy and friendly manner. It’s up to date and up to the point. The only thing I find not good in it is the use of some abbreviations from time to time that don’t have definitions or explanations. the book has a nice format that is comforting for the eyes and the brain.
EXCELLENT, neurologist, a resident of neurology Oxford American Handbook of Neurology is a book necessary

W. Henry Smithson is a General Practitioner and Acting Head, Academic Unit of Primary Medical Care, Medical School, University of Sheffield. Before moving to academic practice I spent twenty-five years in general practice, first in northern Canada and then as a partner in a rural practice in North Yorkshire UK. As a result of funding for community-based research focusing on epilepsy and other long-term conditions the practice developed into a research site with a research assistant and a research nurse. I then moved to a full academic position at the Unit of Primary Medical Care in Sheffield UK where my clinical commitment was in a deprived practice in inner-city Sheffield. This gave me an opportunity to experience the similarities and differences between rural and urban practices before taking up my post in UCC in 2014. I am now working in a practice serving a deprived population in the north of the city. The dynamic and changing nature of general practice requires a valid evaluation of the service and in straightened times also needs to be part of a cost-conscious and cost-effective health service. The practice move to a new Primary Care Centre in 2018 where the department will take part in service development and evaluation. General practice is also a fruitful setting for a range of clinical research. I have been involved in studies of childhood asthma, urinary diaries, medicines adherence, decision aids for patients and self-management of epilepsy. My main interest is in the care of people with epilepsy and the impact if the condition on the individual. I am currently working with epilepsy charities to set up registries of epilepsy-related death in UK and Ireland. The environment of general practice is changing and the various models of general practice demonstrate this. There are still traditional models of small practices that are common in rural areas but can also be found in cities. However, with central support for large multi-disciplinary primary care centers housing general practices, dentistry, counseling, physiotherapy and occupational therapy, pharmacies, opticians, podiatry among others have changed the way practices work. The department will provide advice and support for the evaluation of models of service.
Matthew C. Walker is Professor of Neurology, UCL Institute of Neurology, University College London and national hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, London.

User Reviews
This book is very good as the first start of medical student as it contain enough information for the basics of anatomy of the CNS. When I want to review brain anatomy I always returns to it as it is easy to read and remember with its beautiful illustrations for the pathways and good gross anatomy pictures. I am not saying it is Carpenter neuroanatomy but it is quite enough for the basics like USMLE. Very nice book since I followed it in 1989-1990 till now.
Dr Snell was my best basic science teacher, by far, during my first year of medical school. He had the true gift of relating basic science to clinical scenarios and we all learned much from our time with him. I own a copy of most books he wrote and learn much from his writings whenever I choose to study them.
