Features of Ultrasonic Energy for Cutting Coagulating and Dissecting PDF

Using Ultrasonic Energy to Cut, Coagulate, and Slice PDFsSurgical instruments can be equipped with ultrasonic energy to facilitate the cutting, dissection, and coagulation of arteries and/or tissue. This book describes the use of ultrasonic energy, as found in UltraCision products, for various body areas during surgical procedures. The fundamentals of ultra-cission technology:A hand piece that is connected to a generator holds the instruments. The ultrasonic system, which is located inside the hand piece, converts electrical energy into mechanical action, causing the blades to vibrate longitudinally at a rate of about 55 kHz per second. Collagen molecules vibrate inside the tissues as a result of the blade action, denaturing the tissues and creating a coagulum. When dissecting parenchymatous organs, this technique is very helpful as it allows for a clean and little bleeding dissection. Esophageal surgery, reflex surgery, gastrectomy, colorectal surgery for cancer, diverticulitis, and Crohn’s disease, laparoscopic cholecystectomy, hepatic resection, pancreatic surgery, adrenalectomy, thyroid surgery, hysterectomy, and other gynecologic surgeries, and many more procedures are among the uses of UltraCision. This book provides a comprehensive reference to operating sequences and advice from experienced surgeons, making it an excellent resource for general surgeons learning about this innovative and extremely effective surgical instrument.

Schwartz’s Principles of Surgery 11th Edition PDF download

With the publication of its 11th edition, Schwartz’s Principles of Surgery celebrates its 50th anniversary. It is remarkable to consider the number of students, residents, fellows, surgeons, and patients who have benefitted from the collective knowledge compiled in this text over the last half-century. It is an honor for the current editorial board to carry forward the tradition of excellence in education established by Dr. Seymour Schwartz and previous editors. We recognize that surgeons have entered into an era of surgery in which the outcomes of operations and patient satisfaction scores are carefully monitored, demanding excellence through enhanced evidenced-based knowledge, patient-family–centered care, and the highest levels of professionalism. The first chapter on leadership has taken on special meaning in light of the new demands placed on surgeons for both technical and nontechnical skills, underscoring the importance of instituting a formal leadership-training program for surgery students of all ages with an emphasis on mentoring.
We have also entered into the dawn of a new era of surgery with advances in minimally invasive surgery using robots, molecular contrast, and full computerization, thus enhancing the safety of surgery and allowing surgeons a more comfortable environment in which to work. We recognize that the use of “omic” information is ushering in an era of precision surgery and the importance of surgeons, who have access to the tissues of the human body on a daily basis for “omic” profiling that will guide targeted therapies to enhance the outcomes of surgery. Taking these constructs into consideration, the editors and authors of this 11th edition have done their very best to revise each chapter and convey the current state-of-theart in surgery. Continuing in this effort, five new chapters have been added: Understanding and Evaluating Evidence for Surgical Practice, Enhanced Recovery after Surgery, Ambulatory/Outpatient Surgery, Skills and Simulation, and Web-based Education and Implications of Social Media. This edition contains the latest in leadership training, surgical science, surgical techniques, and therapy for students, residents, fellows, and surgeons. Another important component of this new edition is the artwork. We acknowledge the outstanding artistic team of Jason M. McAlexander & Associates who directed the full color art program, which provides clear and consistent learning aids throughout the text and visually reflects the comprehensive and updated nature of this book.

Operative Surgery 2nd Edition PDF

Operative Surgery 2nd Edition PDF Free Download

This book is a practical guide for the surgeon or surgical trainee about to perform or assist at an operation. The procedures described are those commonly carried out in general, urological, and orthopaedic surgical practice with an introduction on perioperative management and anaesthetics. These should also prove of interest to operating department nurses, assistants, and students of medicine. Indications for and complications of procedures are given but more extensive descriptions of these can be found in surgical text books to which the reader should refer. We emphasize that the book is not for the first-time operator nor does it embrace the philosophy of ‘see one, do one, teach one’. Anyone aspiring to be a surgeon must acquire the basic skills of safe knot-tying and familiarity with surgical instruments.
Only by witnessing, assisting at, and then performing many procedures within the structure of a formal surgical training course can the trainee develop the skill, judgement, and the ability to select patients correctly—the recipe for safe surgery. The text and increased numbers of contributors reflect the changes that have occurred in General Surgery over the past ten years. It is unlikely that in the future we will encounter General Surgical Units. They will be replaced by specialised departments catering for specific areas of surgical expertise. These changes will also fashion future editions of this text in that almost every chapter will become a handbook in itself and the training of surgeons become significantly changed.

Disease Control Priorities 3rd Edition PDF

Disease Control Priorities 3rd Edition PDF Free Download

Conditions that are treated primarily or frequently by surgery constitute a significant portion of the global burden of disease. In 2012, injuries killed nearly 5 million people, and about 270,000 women died from complications of pregnancy. Many of these deaths, as well as deaths from abdominal emergencies, congenital anomalies, and other causes, could be prevented by improved access to quality surgical care. However, surgical care itself has barely been addressed within the field of global health. A growing number of people from diverse backgrounds are attempting to change this, and to increase access to appropriate, safe, surgical care in low- and middle-income countries. The Essential Surgery volume of Disease Control Priorities, third edition (DCP3), contributes to these efforts by (1) better defining the health burden from conditions requiring surgery, (2) identifying those surgical procedures that are the most cost-effective and cost-beneficial, and (3) describing the health care policies and platforms that can universally deliver these procedures safely and effectively. Essential Surgery identifies and studies a group of “essential” surgical conditions and the procedures needed to treat them.
These surgical conditions can be defined as those that (1) are primarily or extensively treated by surgery, (2) have a large health burden, and (3) can be successfully treated by surgical procedures that are cost-effective and feasible to promote globally. To address these conditions, the authors derive a set of 44 essential surgical procedures. These include procedures to treat injuries, obstetric complications, abdominal emergencies, cataracts, and congenital anomalies, among others. We estimate that universal access to this package of essential procedures would prevent about 1.5 million deaths per year or 6 to 7 percent of all preventable deaths in low- and middle-income countries. These procedures rank among the most cost-effective of all health interventions. They are eminently feasible to promote globally, and many could be delivered at first-level hospitals. The large burden of surgical conditions, costeffectiveness of essential surgical procedures, and strong public demand for those procedures suggest that universal coverage of essential surgery should be implemented early on the path to universal health coverage.

Surgical Techniques for the Knee PDF Download

Overview of the Importance of Knee Surgery

Knee surgery plays a crucial role in treating a wide range of knee-related conditions and injuries, significantly improving the quality of life for many patients. The knee joint is one of the largest and most complex joints in the body, responsible for supporting body weight, facilitating movement, and absorbing shocks. However, due to aging, injuries, or degenerative conditions like osteoarthritis, the knee joint can become damaged, leading to pain, limited mobility, and reduced functionality.

Knee surgery is often recommended when conservative treatments such as physical therapy, medication, or lifestyle modifications fail to alleviate symptoms or restore knee function. It aims to repair, replace, or reconstruct damaged knee structures, including ligaments, tendons, cartilage, and bones. By addressing the underlying cause of knee problems, surgery can provide relief from pain, restore joint stability, and improve overall knee function.

Types of Knee Surgery

  1. Arthroscopy: Arthroscopy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that involves inserting a small camera, called an arthroscope, into the knee joint through tiny incisions. This allows the surgeon to visualize the internal structures of the knee and perform various treatments. Arthroscopy is commonly used for diagnosing and treating conditions such as torn meniscus, cartilage damage, and ligament tears.
  2. Partial Knee Replacement: In cases where only a portion of the knee joint is severely damaged, a partial knee replacement may be performed. This procedure involves replacing the damaged compartment of the knee with an artificial implant, while preserving the healthy parts. Partial knee replacement is suitable for patients with localized knee arthritis or specific knee injuries.
  3. Total Knee Replacement: Total knee replacement, also known as knee arthroplasty, is a major surgical procedure in which the entire knee joint is replaced with a prosthetic implant. It is typically recommended for patients with advanced arthritis, significant knee deformity, or chronic knee pain that affects daily activities. Total knee replacement can provide long-lasting pain relief, improved mobility, and enhanced quality of life.

Surgical Techniques

Advancements in surgical techniques have significantly contributed to the success and improved outcomes of knee surgeries. Here are a few notable techniques:

  1. Minimally Invasive Surgery: Minimally invasive knee surgery involves using specialized instruments and smaller incisions compared to traditional open surgery. This technique offers several benefits, including reduced blood loss, less postoperative pain, faster recovery, and minimal scarring. Minimally invasive surgery is commonly used in arthroscopy and partial knee replacement procedures.
  2. Computer-Assisted Navigation: Computer-assisted navigation utilizes advanced computer technology to assist surgeons during knee surgeries. By providing real-time feedback and guidance, this technique enhances precision and accuracy in aligning implants and restoring joint function. It enables surgeons to achieve optimal positioning of implants and improves long-term outcomes.
  3. Robotic Assistance: Robotic-assisted knee surgery involves the use of robotic systems to assist surgeons in performing complex procedures with a higher level of precision. The robotic system provides a three-dimensional visualization of the knee joint, allowing for meticulous planning and execution of surgical steps. Robotic assistance can lead to improved implant positioning, better soft tissue balance, and faster recovery for patients.
