1. Bought this (First aid for the emergency medicine oral boards pdf) about 1.5 weeks before taking the oral boards. That’s definitely not enough time if you really feel like you need to study, but I’ve read enough to say that the cases are interesting, and pretty much the exact mix / flavor of things you’ll see on the actually boards. Full color, good charts/diagrams, overall easy/fun/helpful to read. My only hesitation is that, given something like a 95% pass rate for this test, and the fact that you completed all the written exams and residency, you probably don’t need to be stressing out about this one. You probably could get by just fine without studying at all. But if you’re like me, and trying to not study makes you way too anxious to actually follow through with it, this is a great book to have handy. It’s thorough enough that you definitely shouldn’t need to look anywhere else for more material. But it’s also broken into clear, self-contained chunks in a way that allows you to titrate the amount you want to study/read (they recommended something way overkill in my opinion, like a 2-3 month study plan or something. Come on, this is not Step 1 or even your inservice. Chill a little on this one, OK?). And, final point: by the time you register for the boards, buy plane tickets, food and hotel for this waking-nightmare of a weekend, you’ve probably spent $2,000 or more. So if this (First aid for the emergency medicine oral boards pdf) ~$100 book can even a little bit help reduce the chances of having to repeat this mess, then the cost of this book is pretty much irrelevant
2. For me this was the best review book (First aid for the emergency medicine oral boards pdf). However, it IS outdated on some things. If they would make a new version it would get five stars. If you want concise dont get this one (get Okuda). I used both books and I must say I found errors in both (the new edition). I think the First Aid does a much much better job at preparing you for what you should actually say (good phrases/strategy/etc). The Okuda book is appealing due to the sheer number of cases. Don’t practice cases with non medical people though as it will not flow well with the Okuda book. The first aid is doable to study with someone of nonmedical background. The first aid is great for general medical review but some of the first line treatment medications have changed some. However you should already be up to date on resus meds. Studying is best done with both books in my opinion. The Chicago oral boards practice session is well well worth it also (just as an aside).

I have developed the ICU into a research laboratory to investigate disease processes (e.g., ventilator-associated pneumonia) and patient outcomes.
My research interest has focused on the study of patient outcomes in the intensive care unit setting. We have developed a clinical outcomes study group at Washington University. By performing prospective clinical trials aimed at optimizing the treatment of critically ill patients we have significantly improved the care of acute respiratory failure, pneumonia, chronic obstructive lung disease, and sepsis. Our multidisciplinary research group has also developed and investigated the use of treatment strategies aimed at preventing complications in the intensive care unit to include pneumonia, prolonged need for mechanical ventilation, and organ dysfunction. More recently, we have collaborated with the informatics group and the Washington University Computer Sciences group to develop real-time early warning prediction algorithms to prevent clinical deterioration in non-intensive care unit hospitalized patients.

1. The book (The washington manual of critical care 3rd edition pdf) is written in easy to understand style with plenty of flowcharts. While these flowcharts are helpful in some situations, they are probably unnecessary and redundant in other. Because of this very high number of flowcharts, the overall size of the book has grown out of expectation and not easy to carry in pocket of white coat. Quite interestingly, one particular area, where flow charts could have been of most help i.e ” poisoning or Toxicology” has only one very basic childish kind of flow chart at the beginning and none after that. The biggest shortcoming of this book is the failure of its authors to find the right audience. On one hand, it goes to the level of a medical student and on the other hand, it tackles at level of highly expert and previously trained ICU doctors. In some areas e.g shock, the recommendations of fluid resucitation at 20 ml/kg are at odds with what is practiced in other major center in North America ( 30ml/kg) as well as with surviving sepsis campaign guidelines. In chapters on renal failure, while discussing the dosing of dialysis on page 414, authors state that ” we recommend that IHD be provided three times a week with Urea Reduction ratio of > 70% or Kt/V of 1.2 to 1.4 per treatment”. This is clearly derived from KDIGO guidelines on AKI published in 2012 by National kidney Foundation and are certainly not written or described first time by the authors. This is an editorial oversight among many others in the book and must be rectified. Overall, the book is not for critical care fellows who are starting their ICU experience. I was disappointed to see that book has dedicated only few paragraphs in the form of two short chapters for ventilator management. Chapter 8 is seriously deficient in content and has no connection to the rest of the book. In further disappointment, after chapter 8, the authors almost forget about the ventilators and suddenly take up the subject in chapter 17 again where they discuss weaning. As a critical care physician, central lines, intubations, vent management and trouble shooting are what is expected from critical care fellow in first two to three months. I don’t see this book is focused towards that at all. It rather shifts gears and at times oversimplify the complex topics like intra cranial bleeds and at times overlook aforementioned bread and butter of critical care medicine. I hope they will a better job in next edition. In addition to cutting the number of flow charts by at least 70%, I propose following order for the future editions
2. Each page of this book (The washington manual of critical care 3rd edition pdf) contains clear and concise flow charts and just enough paragraphs of explanation to understand the rational for treatment of disease. Can be used as a reference when needed and as a learning tool.

The Author of Roberts and Hedges’ Clinical Procedures in Emergency Medicine and Acute Care 7th Edition PDF

Dr. James R. Roberts is a Professor in the Department of Pediatrics, Medical University of South Carolina, Charleston, South Carolina.  He is a graduate  of Texas Tech University School of Medicine, Lubbock, Texas.  He completed his internship and residency program in pediatrics at the Medical College of Georgia. He continued his training with a Fellowship in General Academic Pediatrics as well as Masters in Public Health at the University of Alabama at  Birmingham, Alabama.

He recently completed service on the Committee on Environmental Health for the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and is immediate past Chair of the AAP Nexus on environmental health. He is authoring a policy statement and technical report on pediatric pesticide exposure for the AAP. Dr. Roberts served in the past as a consultant to the South Carolina Lead poisoning prevention program, and has worked to develop a comprehensive lead-screening program in Charleston using geographic information systems. He is a co-author in the CDC published guidelines: Managing Elevated Blood Lead Levels among Young Children.  He is co-editor of US EPA Recognition and Management of Pesticide Poisoning, 5th edition and is a primary author on “Environmental Management of Pediatric Asthma: Guidelines for Health Care Providers”, published by the National Environmental Education Foundation (NEEF).
