User Reviews

  1. I used this book during my third year family medicine rotation to prepare for the shelf exam. The format is the same question/answer format of the other Deja Review series. The information was presented in a concise manner. I really liked the charts, for example of diabetic medications, and they seemed to be must know information for the shelf. Other information however was hit or miss and seemed to be geared more towards pimping questions than shelf specific. Overall a good, relatively short book, that was a good overview of ambulatory medicine. Supplemented with question banks and ambulatory chapters of other textbooks makes for a solid tool for shelf prep.
  2. With this resource I obtained honors on the family medicine COMAT, and it wasn’t terrible to work through. For people who like this style of learning, I’d definitely recommend it.

Oxford Handbook of Paediatrics 2nd Edition PDF Download

Product description

Review

It’s changeover day, you’re on the special baby care unit for the first time ever…what you want is the paediatric equivalent of the Oxford Handbook of Clinical Medicine to help steer you through the rapids of paediatrics…this handbook…gives succinct guidance [and] is the book I want in my back pocket on changeover day. (C K Bird, Archives of Diseases in Childhood)

Synopsis

An exciting new addition to the Oxford Handbook Series, the Oxford Handbook of Paediatrics provides a compact guide to all aspects of acute and chronic paediatrics. The Handbook’s team of specialist contributors and editors have successfully condensed many years of clinical experience into a pocket-sized compendium of clinical problems and treatment options. Taking a ‘child-centred’ approach to the subject, the authors have provided comprehensive coverage of areas such as neonatology, surgery, genetics and congenital malformations and child protection in a user-friendly and succinct style. Sections are also devoted to covering the treatment of children in the community, and the psychological effects of illness on both the child and their family. With practical advice and space for personalised notes, this handbook will be invaluable to all those involved in the care of the younger patient. A ‘must have’ resource at all stages of training and in various clinical practice settings.

About the Author

After undergraduate studies in Cambridge University Robert Tasker undertook his graduate medical education in London and higher professional specialist training at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children, London, and The Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, USA. His first Hospital Consultant post was in Paediatric Respiratory Medicine and Intensive Care at Great Ormond Street. After 7 years he moved back to Cambridge where he is now University Senior Lecturer in Paediatrics and Honorary Consultant Paediatrician specialising in Intensive Care. For the last 9 years he has directed undergraduate education in paediatrics at the Cambridge University Clinical School, and more recently he has been extensively involved in developing a new undergraduate curriculum and examination in Paediatrics. He is Director of Medical Studies for undergraduates at Selwyn College, Cambridge. He is educational supervisor for higher professional trainees in Paediatrics in his Department. After studying medicine at the University of Leeds Rob McClure trained both as a Paediatrician and then a Neonatologist at various centres including Leeds, Liverpool, Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children in London, and in both Perth and Sydney in Australia. His first consultant post was in Neonatal Medicine at Addenbrookes Hospital, Cambridge, where he also ran the Paediatric Gastroenterology service for several years. After 6 years he moved to St John of God Hospital in Perth, Australia where he is currently Head of the Neonatal Department. He is a clinician and clinical researcher into Neonatal Nutrition. Dr Carlo Acerini studied pharmacology (BSc Hons, 1984) and medicine (MBChB, 1988) at the University of Dundee, Scotland. After postgraduate training in paediatric medicine in the West of Scotland, he trained and undertook research in paediatric endocrinology and diabetes at the University of Oxford and at the University of Cambridge. Dr Acerini is currently University Senior Lecturer at the University of Cambridge and a Consultant Paediatrician (Endocrinology & Diabetes) at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge. His research interests are in Type 1 diabetes and endocrinology in children and adolescents.

Preface

The first ‘boke’ of pediatrics printed in English was written by Thomas Phaire (1510-1560), a man from East Anglia who studied medicine at the University of Oxford. The book had 56 pages, measured 3 7/8 inches (9.8 cm) by 2 5/8 inches (6.7 cm) and was covered. . . innumerable passions and diseases, so that the body of man is subject, and in addition, in general, the tender age of children is irritated and greedy with these diseases.

Costume of the brain, swelling of the head. . . ‘ 1 In 1553, the “innumerable passions and diseases” reached 39 presenting clinical problems. As doctors, we met and worked for the first time in the heart of East Anglia (University of Cambridge) and now we have collaborated with Oxford University Press in this company, a new pediatric handbook. Our similarity with Thomas Phaire has not escaped us, especially because we see the importance of basing a text on common clinical problems that arise.

Our main goal is to provide a compact source of information and clinical thinking that can be used in the clinic or hospital ward, at a time when the child is being seen. The challenge, therefore, was to distill the content of the information found in several textbooks into a conveniently sized manual without the loss of important information.

We easily reached the limit in the pages they gave us, so we had to be strict in the selection of key facts crucial for clinical practice. Our intention is that the manual is used from the beginning of education in pediatrics to the general superior training in the field.

We have maintained the tradition of providing content and text that often exceed what is required by the generalist; We believe it is important that students and readers see the full picture. There are spaces where you can add more conference notes, other readings, and personal experiences.

This is destined. It means that the manual can be personal, develop it with you and use it in any practice you choose: hospitalist, generalist, or community and family practice. Above all, we hope that the manual will give you the confidence to handle pediatric clinical problems effectively and safely.

Bailey & Love’s Essential Clinical Anatomy | Download PDF| [Direct Links]

About the Book

This essential companion to Bailey & Love’s Short Practice of Surgery covers the clinical conditions most commonly encountered by medical students, junior clinicians, and surgeons in training.

This is clinical anatomy at its best !

Structured by body region, each chapter includes plentiful clinical photographs and images supplementing the high-quality anatomical diagrams, using the best modality to demonstrate anatomical relevance. Highlighted descriptions of clinical relevance emphasise the integrated approach so central to current teaching practice, and facilitated by the wealth of both clinical and anatomical experience of the distinguished author team.

The expansion and integration of disciplines within the medical
curriculum has reduced time for anatomy teaching, particularly
for human dissection, but has not reduced its vital
importance. While surgeons need to know the detailed anatomy
in their operating field, knowledge of the anatomy that
underlies every clinical examination and every radiological/
medical image is an essential component of everyday clinical
practice.
This text provides a comprehensive cover of most normal
and abnormal living anatomy, essential for students across
the world. It addresses the knowledge and skills laid down
by the General Medical Council (GMC) and the American
Association of Clinical Anatomists (AACA; ‘A clinical
anatomy curriculum for the medical student of the 21st
century: gross anatomy’, Clinical Anatomy 1996;9:71–99; see
also Smith et al., ‘The Anatomical Society core regional anatomy
syllabus for undergraduate medicine’, Journal of Anatomy
2016;228:15–23).
The regional approach followed corresponds to a typical
clinical examination. The nervous system is included, rather
than being covered in an additional text; also included is
embryology in sufficient detail to explain many common congenital
abnormalities. Wherever possible, information, such
as muscle attachments, is tabulated and clinical information
is highlighted.
The extensive number of illustrations include surface anatomy,
coloured labelled diagrams, dissections, a wide range of
radiological, laparoscopic and endoscopic images, and clinical
pictures of common diseases. A comprehensive index facilitates
rapid location of the desired passages. Self-assessment
material is included at the end of each chapter; these multiple
choice questions (MCQs), single best answer (SBA) questions
(used in the USA and also now more widely), extended
matching questions (EMQs) and applied questions reflect
styles of examination around the world. The answers and
explanations can be found in the text, but additional material
is included where appropriate.
The authors bring a combined experience of over 150
years of anatomy teaching at all levels, and present this large
volume of information in a palatable, interesting and understandable
form, emphasizing its relevance to disease and clinical

User Reviews for Deja Review Series Books PDF

Listed below are some of the user reviews for the Deja Book Series PDF.

  1. As I mentioned in other reviews of the Deja Review series, I am a huge fan of these books and used them extensively in my Step 1 preparation. I read the pathology book cover to cover, and found that it was a good adjunct to my 1st tier resources (FA, Goljan, qBanks). It covers most of the major concepts in pathology, and is a quick and easy way to test and increase your fund of rote knowledge.
  2. Great to use throughout medical school to memorize the little facts before an exam after you’ve gotten the theory down. Also, helps in refreshing a little bit before the step. While I think firecracker and first aid are better uses of my time, I would also find myself grabbing this from time to time to get down key points and facts over an organ system that might have been giving me a bit of trouble or I hadn’t seen in a while. Highly recommend.
  3. Great, rapid review of the high yield concepts in neuroscience. Saved my life and I highly recommend this book! You won’t be disapointed.
  4. This is certainly not the best way to learn physiology, but it is a great review of you already do know it and need to brush up on the subject.

Dx/Rx Sexual Dysfunction In Men And Women PDF »

Preface:

It is our belief that sexual dysfunction is a common condition affecting both men and women. Many practitioners, particularly in the disciplines of family practice, internal medicine, and urology, may have the opportunity to treat both male and female patients, sometimes even the husband and wife of a family. In such instances, sexual dysfunction may be occurring in both partners. For that reason, we decided to present information regarding the pathogenesis, diagnosis, and treatment of sexual dysfunction in men and women in the same book. The book is well supplemented with tables and timely references. Any practitioner who deals with both male and female patients with sexual problems will find this book to be useful. Introduction
■ Penile erection is the result of increased penile inflow of blood and reduced outflow.
• Arterial inflow of blood to the penis is coupled with vasodilation of the cavernosal and helicine arteries.
• This results in blood filling the sinusoidal spaces of the corpora cavernosa. • This leads to expansion of the lacunar spaces and tunica albuginea.
■ Neural control of erection involves a shift from sympathetic tone to parasympathetic tone.
■ The neural circuitry for erection is based in the spinal cord.
■ Role of Spinal Cord and Neural Innervation of the Penis
■ The penis receives autonomic innervation from the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems.
■ Both systems contain nuclei located in the spinal cord.
■ The parasympathetic nervous system is excitatory for erectile function. • Preganglionic parasympathetic neurons arise from the sacral spinal cord segments S2–S4. • The major segment contributing to erectile function is S3.
■ The sympathetic nervous system is inhibitory to erectile function. • However, because of its vasoconstrictive properties, some fibers have a role in pelvic vasoconstriction, which may increase blood flow to the penis to promote erection.
