It is almost 28 years now since the publication of its first edition that Dutta’s Textbook of Obstetrics continues to provide basic knowledge to medical students, trainee residents, doctors and midwives for improved patient care. It is a great pleasure to see this book come out with international quality in its seventh edition as there was an overwhelming demand for the new thoroughly revised edition of the book in many parts of the world. Dutta’s text is committed to be revised and updated continually. Maximum attention has been paid to update the “core curricula” that impart fundamental knowledge, learning and skill. In view of expanding knowledge of molecular biology, genetics, imaging and other diagnostic modalities, major changes have been incorporated in all the chapters of the current edition. New management options are also discussed. Object of the text is to provide a current cutting edge information which is again easy to read, understand, and above all will be based on evidence. This seventh edition of DC Dutta’s widely acclaimed comprehensive textbook of obstetrics has come up in a fully colored format. It is profusely illustrated with 407 full colored line drawings, photographs and sketches.
The special attractions of this text like summary boxes, tables, algorithms are for easy understanding and reproducibility. The key points at the end of each chapter is for quick revision without referring to the text. The uniqueness of this text lies in its presentation style which is simple, clear and concise. The language throughout the text has been kept lucid and unambiguous. Medical advances upto the time of publication have been incorporated. Recent research has necessitated major changes in all the chapters in the text. Few chapters have been exhaustively updated while some have been completely rewritten. Operative obstetrics (chapter 36) has been thoroughly updated and amply illustrated for easy learning of common obstetric operations and skills. The chapter on practical obstetrics (chapter 41) has been rewritten considering the importance of practical obstetrics. This 24th edition of Williams Obstetrics has been extensively and strategically reorganized. Primarily writing for the busy practitioner—those “in the trenches”—we continue to present the detailed staples of basic obstetrics such as maternal anatomy and physiology, preconceptional and prenatal care, labor, delivery, and the puerperium, along with detailed discussions of obstetrical complications exemplified by preterm labor, hemorrhage, hypertension, and many more. Once again, we emphasize the scientific-based underpinnings of clinical obstetrics with special emphasis on biochemical and physiological principles of female reproduction. And, as was the hallmark of previous editions, these dovetail with descriptions of evidencebased practices. The reorganized format allows a greater emphasis on the fetus as a patient along with expanded coverage of fetal diagnosis and therapy. These changes are complemented by more than 100 new sonographic and magnetic resonance images that display normal fetal anatomy and common fetal anomalies. Finally, to emphasize the “M” in maternal–fetal medicine, we continue to iterate the myriad medical and surgical disorders that can complicate pregnancy.
To accomplish these goals, the text has been updated with more than 3000 new literature citations through 2014. Moreover, there are nearly 900 figures that include sonograms, MR images, photographs, micrographs, and data graphs, most in vivid color. Much of the original artwork was rendered by our own medical illustrators. In this edition, as before, we continue to incorporate contemporaneous guidelines from professional and academic organizations such as the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the Society for Maternal–Fetal Medicine, the National Institutes of Health, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, among others. Many of these data are distilled into almost 100 newly constructed tables, in which information has been arranged in a format that is easy to read and use. While we strive to cite numerous sources to provide multiple evidence-based options for such management schemes, we also include our own clinical experiences drawn from a large obstetrical service. As usual, while we are convinced that these are disciplined examples of evidence-based obstetrics, we quickly acknowledge that they do not constitute the sole method of management.

This book is based on French’s Index of Differential Diagnosis which was first published in 1912. The aim of that book was ‘to help in the differential diagnosis of any condition in medicine, surgery or any specialty that may be seen in general or hospital practice’. I was asked to edit the gynaecological sections for the most recent edition, which was published in 2005. On completion, I felt there was room for a similar type of book for obstetrics and gynaecology. Subsequently I enlisted the help of current and former colleagues as well as friends from around the world to produce this book, which aims to cover most of the symptoms that may be commonly seen in a woman presenting to the gynaecologist or to the obstetrician during her pregnancy. I have tried to make the book as accessible as possible to all doctors regardless of specialty and grade, as well as midwives, nurses, medical students and patients alike. In some sections management of the symptoms has been addressed but the main emphasis of this book is differential diagnosis. References and websites have been included where appropriate and a glossary of common terms and terminology used in obstetrics and gynaecology has been provided at the end.
