User Reviews

  1. The seller ended up selling me a counterfeit version of the book so this review could be irrelevant. This is the key pathology learning tool for medical students and if you combine this with Goljan you can learn just about all the path that you would ever want. Highly recommend
  2. I purchased the “new book”, but it’s actually a new counterfeit copy of the book, I paid more for the “new”, but if I had known it wasnt the original one i would have just purchased it through the pathoma website directly. It’s ok, but what’s frustrating is that it has a lower quality overall, the pictures are smudged, pages are lower quality. buts its usable, for a copy it should be cheaper though.
  3. Must have for second year medical students. Don’t even thing about going without it. This book, in combination with First Aid, is a powerful tool in studying for the STEP1. Don’t even think about trying to “acquire” this book through alternative mediums. You’re going to want a hard cover as well as the high quality videos that it comes with when you sign up.

Understanding Pathophysiology 6th Edition PDF »

The sixth edition of Understanding Pathophysiology, like other editions, has been rigorously updated and revised with consideration of the rapid advances in molecular and cell biology. Many sections have been rewritten or reorganized to provide a foundation for better understanding of the mechanisms of disease. Integrated throughout the text are concepts from the basic sciences, including genetics, epigenetics, gene–environment interaction, immunity, and inflammation. The text has been written to assist students with the translation of the concepts and processes of pathophysiology into clinical practice and to promote lifelong learning. Although the primary focus of the text is pathophysiology,we continue to include discussions of the following interconnected topics to highlight their importance for clinical practice:
• A life-span approach that includes special sections on aging and separate chapters on children
• Epidemiology and incidence rates showing regional and worldwide differences that reflect the importance of environmental and lifestyle factors on disease initiation and progression
• Sex differences that affect epidemiology and pathophysiology
• Molecular biology—mechanisms of normal cell function and how their alteration leads to disease
• Clinical manifestations, summaries of treatment, and health promotion/risk reduction

Graff’s Textbook of Urinalysis and Body Fluids 3rd Edition PDF Free Download
Preface:

Sister Graff’s A Handbook of Routine Urinalysis had served the clinical laboratory profession as a classic reference text of urine testing and atlas of urinary sediment from 1 983 to 20 1 1 , when it was revised for the second edition to add chapters on body fluid analysis. Our goal for the third edition of this text is continually to preserve the integrity and importance of Sister Graff’s work while expanding its use as a valuable resource for students, instructors, and laboratory professionals. The second edition had substantially revised and enhanced the content to bring it up-to-date and expanded the text by including other body fluids, Chapter Objectives, Key Terms, Terms, Study Questions, Case Studies, and a Glossary to make the text more user friendly in the classroom. These updates and additions were reflected in the new title, Graft’s Textbook of Urinalysis and Body Fluids. This, the third edition continues to provide students, instructors, and laboratory professionals with updated information concerning urine and body fluid analyses. The expanded urinalysis and body fluids coverage in this text is comprehensive, clearly presented, and explained in easy-to-understand language. Continuing the standard set by Sister Graff, the book uses numerous color photomicrographs to familiarize readers with both the normal and abnormal structures found in the urinary sediment and body fluids while tables and illustrations help clarify concepts. The third edition is divided into three sections for better grouping of content. Section I includes foundational information about renal anatomy (Chapter 1 ) and disorders that may be detected by analyzing urine (Chapters 2 and 3 ) , as well as introductory information regarding clinical laboratory operations including safety (Chapter 4) and microscopy (Chapter 5). Section II focusses on the urinalysis, beginning with urine specimen collection and preservation (Chapter 6), then progressing through physical examination (Chapter 7), chemical analysis (Chapter 8 ) , and microscopic exam- Preface ination including 1 7 new images (Chapter 9 ) , ending with the central chapter and j ewel of Graff’s Textbook of Urinalysis and Body Fluids, the atlas of urinary sediment containing (Chapter 1 0 ) . Instructors, students, and clinicians will find that no other text includes a comparable atlas. Section Ill contains revised information as well as new information about various body fluid analyses beginning with an introduction (Chapter 1 1 ) and goes into further depth about: cerebrospinal fluid (Chapter 12), serous body fluids (Chapter 1 3 ) , synovial fluid (Chapter 14), gastric fluid and fecal analysis (Chapter 1 5) , semen analysis (Chapter 16), amniotic fluid (Chapter 1 7) , vaginal secretions (Chapter 1 8 ) , and miscellaneous body fluids (Chapter 1 9 ) . Several new images have been added to this section to provide for better comprehension of the information presented. The book wraps up with a chapter on automated methods and equipment (Chapter 20); Appendices provide answers to the study and case questions, historically relevant urinalysis information, reagent strip color chart, and a detailed explanation of manual hemocytometer cell count. A glossary of terms that is ideal for study and review summaries key terms highlighted in chapter; and for those who rely on the text as a reference, a complete index.

Heart failure is any cause of heart dysfunction that keeps the heart from pumping enough blood to meet the metabolic needs of tissues in the body. Commonly in heart failure, the left ventricle is unable to eject volume of blood into the aorta, resulting in increased left ventricular end-diastolic volume and pressure (LVEDV and LVEDP, respectively). Heart failure is a common end point of many different cardiac diseases. Heart fa ilure can be divided into left- and right-sided heart failure. 1.1 Left-Sided Heart Failure Left-sided heart failure has a variety of causes, but usually can be broken into five categories. 1.1.1 Etiology of Congestive Heart Failure (CHF) • Cardiac Muscle Loss (Ischemia/Infarction): • Most common cause of CHF. • Lack of blood supply (ischemia) to cardiomyocytes secondary to myocardial infarction may result in coagulative necrosis. • Pressure Overload: The cardiomyocyte consistently functions at a higher level of contractility to achieve the same amount of cardiac output (CO) as prior, resulting in eventual heart failure. • Hypertension: Pressure overload can be caused by hypertension because it forces the heart to pump against high arterial pressures.
• Aortic Stenosis: Ventricular pressure must increase dramatically to overcome the increased afterload that is created by aortic stenosis, resulting in pressure overload. • Volume Overload: Volume overload can cause left-sided heart failure if an abundance of blood on the left side of the heart overloads the left atrium and ventricle. • Mitral Regurgitation: One cause of volume overload is mitral regurgitation because this causes blood to f low back into the left atrium during systole. • High Output: The other main cause of volume overload is high output failure, which can be seen in patients with severe anemia or thyrotoxicosis. • Loss of Contractility: Impaired muscle contractility may result in congestive heart failure. • Toxicity: Alcohol and chemotherapeutic drugs, such as doxorubicin, may be toxic to cardiomyocytes. • Infectious Myocarditis: Adenovirus, amastigotes phase in Chagas, diphtheria, and rheumatic fever; nnay cause cardiac injury.

Overview of Cellular Pathophysiology 1.1 Homeostasis The normal cell is capable of making responses to physiologic demands and maintaining a steady state of function referred to as homeostasis. When a new steady state is achieved in response to altered physiologic stress, the process is referred to as adaptation. Adaptations are reversible changes that allow cells to survive Stress, increased demand Nor mo.l Cell ( horneostilSis) /.””‘ bility P'[ ——-.1 to adapt l _ Adaptation ~ ; Injurious stimulus Cell I nj ury) Cell Death A Figure 1- 1.1 Cellular Response to Stress and Injury and function. If the ability of cells to adapt is exceeded, cell injury results, and this is also reversible t o a point.
If the injurious stimulus persists, and adaptation is no longer possible, irreversible cell injury and cell death ensue. 1.2 Causes of Cell Injury Physiologic adaptation to stress can progress to significant cell injury if the stimulus is not removed. A variety of causes of injury exist, including: • Hypoxia: A deficiency of oxygen that reduces aerobic oxidative respiration • Chemical agents/drugs • Infectious agents • Immunologic reactions • Congenital/genetic derangements • Mechanical trauma • Nutritional deficiency or excess 1.3 Variables in Cell Injury The response of cells to injurious stimuli depends on a number of variables: • The nature of the injurious stimulus • The duration of action or injury • The adaptability of specific cells to injury; for example, anoxia causes cell death in: • Neurons: 3 to 5 minutes • Myocardium: 1 t o 2 hours • Fibroblasts: hours
