DERMATOLOGY BY Jean L Bolognia MD Download pdf

Dermatology is the branch of medicine that deals with the skin, its structure, functions, and diseases. The skin is the body’s largest organ and it has many important functions, such as protecting the body from injury and infection, regulating body temperature, and producing vitamin D. The skin can be affected by a wide variety of diseases, including acne, eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, and skin cancer.

DERMATOLOGY is the study of the skin and its diseases. It is a medical specialty that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of skin disorders. A dermatologist is a doctor who specializes in dermatology.

There are many different types of skin disorders. Some are caused by infections, others by allergies, and still others by problems with the immune system. Some skin disorders are hereditary, while others are caused by environmental factors or lifestyle choices.

The treatment of skin disorders depends on the cause of the problem. Infections are often treated with antibiotics, allergies with antihistamines, and immune system problems with medication that modulates the immune system. In some cases, surgery may be necessary to correct a problem with the skin.

DERMATOLOGY BY Jean L Bolognia The practice of dermatology is based upon a visual approach to clinical disease, with the development of an appreciation of recurrent patterns and images. The entire spectrum of our discipline, from the generation of clinicopathologic differential diagnoses to the orientation of rotational flaps, relies upon imagery. As a result, visualization also plays a critical role in how we integrate new information into pre-existing frameworks that serve as the hard drives of our medical memory. In the textbook Dermatology there is a strong emphasis on visual learning. This commitment is reflected in the use of schematic diagrams to convey the principles of skin biology as well as cutaneous surgery, and the inclusion of algorithms, which provide a logical as well as practical approach to commonly encountered clinical problems. The majority of the basic science is integrated throughout the book and appears as introductory chapters to the various sections. All illustrations and graphics are in color and photomicrographs demonstrating key histologic findings are found interspersed within the clinical chapters. These chapters also contain tables that attempt to provide weighted differential diagnoses and a ‘ladder’ approach to therapeutic interventions. Lastly, color-coding of sections allows easy and rapid access to required information. The ultimate goal of Dermatology is for it to never make its way to the bookshelf because it is being used on a weekly, or perhaps even daily, basis. Hopefully, this book will function as a colleague, albeit a non-verbal one, who is easily approachable and possesses the necessary expertise to provide succinct, up-to date information that is both precise and practical. Realizing this goal required the time and energy of our contributors who have unselfishly shared their knowledge and experience with literally thousands of patients from around the world, and we thank them.

About the author

Dr. Jean Bolognia is the senior editor of the textbook Dermatology, which is now in its fourth edition, and Dermatology Essentials. Jean has served as President of the Medical Dermatology Society, the Women’s Dermatologic Society, and the American Dermatological Association, in addition to serving as Vice-President of the Society of Investigative Dermatology, the American Board of Dermatology, and the International Society of Dermatology. She has also been elected to serve on the Board of Directors of the American Academy of Dermatology and the International League of Dermatological Societies. In the latter organization, she currently serves as Secretary-General.

VOLUMES, SECTIONS AND COLOR CODING Dermatology is divided into two volumes. The book is divided into 22 sections, which are color-coded as follows for reference: VOLUME ONE – Overview of basic science – Pruritus – Papulosquamous and eczematous dermatoses – Urticarias, erythemas and purpuras – Vesiculobullous diseases – Adnexal diseases – Rheumatologic diseases – Metabolic and systemic diseases – Genodermatoses – Pigmentary diseases – Hair, nails and mucous membranes – Infections, infestations and bites VOLUME TWO – Disorders due to physical agents – Disorders of Langerhans cells and macrophages – Atrophies and disorders of dermal connective tissue – Disorders of subcutaneous fat – Vascular disorders – Neoplasms of the skin – Medical therapy – Physical treatment modalities – Surgery SECTION 22 – Cosmetic surgery

User Review

I teach graduate school dermatology and was very disappointed in this book–in fact, I just returned it. Problems? #1) does not talk enough about epidemiology; #2) does not include enough common AKAs; and #3) it needs editing badly! For example, it will list a heading of, for example, treatment and then go off talking about pathophysiology or another subject completely unrelated to treatment – that completely drove me crazy. For a book that costs over $300 US, I would expect all of the aforementioned problems to be non-existent.

User Reviews for Deja Review Series Books PDF

Listed below are some of the user reviews for the Deja Book Series PDF.

  1. As I mentioned in other reviews of the Deja Review series, I am a huge fan of these books and used them extensively in my Step 1 preparation. I read the pathology book cover to cover, and found that it was a good adjunct to my 1st tier resources (FA, Goljan, qBanks). It covers most of the major concepts in pathology, and is a quick and easy way to test and increase your fund of rote knowledge.
  2. Great to use throughout medical school to memorize the little facts before an exam after you’ve gotten the theory down. Also, helps in refreshing a little bit before the step. While I think firecracker and first aid are better uses of my time, I would also find myself grabbing this from time to time to get down key points and facts over an organ system that might have been giving me a bit of trouble or I hadn’t seen in a while. Highly recommend.
  3. Great, rapid review of the high yield concepts in neuroscience. Saved my life and I highly recommend this book! You won’t be disapointed.
  4. This is certainly not the best way to learn physiology, but it is a great review of you already do know it and need to brush up on the subject.

Description of First Aid for the USMLE Step 1 2018 PDF 28th Edition

This is an outstanding comprehensive update. the 2017 version and the 2017 to 2018 update is much more drastic than 2016 to 2017 was. There are updates to a large number of images and tables. An example is the glaucoma drugs that are now nicely fit into a table unlike in the 2017 version. There are also updates that have been found in the 2018 version that have annotated into the 2017 version from UWorld. The infant/child development chart is now in its appropriate place, the reproductive section rather than public health sciences as in 2017. These are only but a few examples and there are many such changes and updates. A great and welcome update to an already amazing resource.

User Reviews

  1. Use this book as a way to check off the things that you need to learn – it should not be used as a primary source for your learning. As you go through topics in school, take notes in the relevant sections in First Aid. Watch Osmosis, Kaplan, DIT, Boards and Beyond, etc. and annotate throughout first and second year of medical school. Use Sketchy and annotate the book too.
  2. One of the single best board prep resources around. I had the 2016 version prior to purchasing the new 2018 version and there is so much added content. The pages are sturdy and smooth to write on. The pictures are vibrant. I love love love this book.

User Reviews

  1. The seller ended up selling me a counterfeit version of the book so this review could be irrelevant. This is the key pathology learning tool for medical students and if you combine this with Goljan you can learn just about all the path that you would ever want. Highly recommend
  2. I purchased the “new book”, but it’s actually a new counterfeit copy of the book, I paid more for the “new”, but if I had known it wasnt the original one i would have just purchased it through the pathoma website directly. It’s ok, but what’s frustrating is that it has a lower quality overall, the pictures are smudged, pages are lower quality. buts its usable, for a copy it should be cheaper though.
  3. Must have for second year medical students. Don’t even thing about going without it. This book, in combination with First Aid, is a powerful tool in studying for the STEP1. Don’t even think about trying to “acquire” this book through alternative mediums. You’re going to want a hard cover as well as the high quality videos that it comes with when you sign up.

User Reviews
Reviewing the new, 4th edition:
Got this book to study for Step 2 CK with about 3 weeks before the exam.
Pros:
-Easy to read
-High-yield information in boxes on the side
-Logical groupings of diagnoses together
-Common pitfalls of students outlined
Cons:
-Seems geared towards the average test-taker. If you are gunning for a high score, this book does NOT include a lot of the more esoteric material. Specifically, multiple questions in the newest NBME cannot be answered by looking at this book
-Inconsistent level of detail for certain diagnoses. Too much for some, too little for others
-Paucity of mnemonics or memory aids

Essentials of Kinesiology for the Physical Therapist Assistant 2nd Edition PDF »

Essentials of Kinesiology for the Physical Therapist Assistant 2nd Edition PDF Free Download

Essentials of Kinesiology for the Physical Therapist Assistant is intended to provide students with a firm foundation of kinesiology—the study of human movement. This text focuses strongly on the structure and function of the musculoskeletal system, serving as prerequisite subject matter for all aspects of physical therapist assistant (PTA) practice. Thorough yet clear explanations of normal human movement set the stage for relevant discussions of many common compensatory strategies, treatment techniques, and abnormal movement patterns. Vivid anatomic detail of bones, joints, supporting ligaments, and muscles is interwoven with an emphasis on clinical relevance for the PTA. Kinesiology is the heart of physical therapy practice, regardless of the precise role of the practitioner. Furthermore, a firm understanding of kinesiology is based on a solid background in the anatomy and function of the musculoskeletal system. This knowledge sets the stage for understanding the basis for normal and abnormal movement. Only with this knowledge can the clinician clearly treat dysfunctional, labored, weakened, or painful movement. Audience This book is intended primarily for students in PTA programs and those seeking a pre–physical therapy degree. However, its usefulness does not end there. The text is also a valuable tool for practicing PTAs or for any student or professional seeking a clear, clinically relevant introduction to kinesiology. Unique Author Team By combining our experiences, we are able to offer the PTA community a comprehensive, anatomically rich, and clinically relevant textbook on kinesiology. Paul Jackson Mansfield has practiced physical therapy for 16 years and at present is the director of the physical therapist assistant program at Milwaukee Area Technical College. Mr. Mansfield also teaches extensively in the program, including courses in kinesiology, musculoskeletal anatomy, orthopedics, advanced therapeutic exercise, and neuromuscular rehabilitation.

As with all previous editions, the tenth edition of Exercise Physiology: Theory and Application to Fitness and Performance is intended for students interested in exercise physiology, clinical exercise physiology, human performance, kinesiology/exercise science, physical therapy, and physical education. The overall objective of this text is to provide the student with an up-to-date understanding of the physiology of exercise. Moreover, the book contains numerous clinical applications including exercise tests to evaluate cardiorespiratory fitness and information on exercise training for improvements in health-related physical fitness and sports performance. This book is intended for a one-semester, upperlevel undergraduate or beginning graduate exercise physiology course. Clearly, the text contains more material than can be covered in a single 15-week semester. This is by design. The book was written to be comprehensive and afford instructors the freedom to select the material that they consider to be the most important for the composition of their class. Furthermore, if desired, the book could be used in a two-semester sequence of exercise physiology courses (e.g., Exercise Physiology I and II) to cover the entire 25 chapters contained in the text. NEW TO THIS EDITION The tenth edition of our book has undergone major revisions and highlights the latest research in exercise physiology. Indeed, every chapter contains new and expanded discussions, new text boxes, new figures, updated references, and contemporary suggested readings. New Topics and Updated Content The content of this new edition has been markedly updated. Specifically, each chapter has been revised and updated to include new and amended box features, new illustrations, new research findings, and the inclusion of up-to-date references and suggested readings. The following list describes some of the significant changes that have made the tenth edition more complete and up-to-date:
■■ Chapter 0: Two new “A Look Back” features were added to highlight the careers of Elsworth Buskirk and Frances Hellebrandt.
■■ Chapter 1: New suggested readings and updated references were added.
■■ Chapter 2: Updated discussion on the role that heat shock proteins play in the cellular adaptation to stress.
■■ Chapter 3: New illustration and box feature added to highlight the structure and function of the two subpopulations of mitochondria found in skeletal muscle.
■■ Chapter 4: Several figures were upgraded along with the addition of a new section on measurement of V˙ O2 max.
■■ Chapter 5: Numerous new and improved figures were added along with a new table highlighting hormonal changes during exercise. New information added on the impact of both growth hormone and anabolic steroids on skeletal muscle size and function.

We are delighted that the physiological community so eagerly welcomed the Second Edition of our book. The 3-fold philosophy that has guided us in the previous editions has endured as we prepared the Third Edition. First, we combine the expertise of several authors with the consistency of a single pen. In the First Edition, we achieved this singleness of pen by sitting—shoulder to shoulder—at a computer as we rewrote the primary copy of our authors, line by line. By the time we began editing the Third Edition, one of us had moved from New Haven to Cleveland. Even so, we continued to edit jointly and in real time— monitor to monitor—using desktop-sharing software. After more than two decades, we have become so accustomed to each other’s writing styles that we can literally finish each other’s sentences. Second, we still integrate physiological concepts from the level of DNA and epigenetics to the human body, and everything in between. Third, we complete the presentation of important physiological principles by pairing them with illustrations from pathophysiology, thereby putting physiology in a clinical context. In this Third Edition, we have updated the entire book to reflect new molecular insights. In the process, we have shortened the printed version of the book by 40 pages. The Third Edition contains 20 new or redrawn figures as well as enhancements to 125 others. Similarly, we included over 190 tables. In the First Edition, we launched the concept of online-only Notes—electronic footnotes that were available on the Student Consult website. These Notes (indicated by icons in the print version of the book) amplify concepts in the text, provide details and derivations of equations, add clinical illustrations, and include interesting facts (e.g., biographies of famous physiologists). With the increased use of online materials and eBooks, our readers may welcome our updating of the previous Notes as well as a 13% increase in the total number of Notes for the Third Edition, for a total of about 750.
