Amethyst Peridot “Nina Winchester has it all. The Perfect house. A gorgeous husband who is so kind and rich. She even has a cute little girl. She decides to interview and eventually hire Millie for a live in nanny/housekeeper position.

Millie applies for this “dream job” to be the housekeeper/maid for the Winchesters. It is a live in position with amazing pay. Too good to be true. Well, she should have listened to that feeling. Nina is a horrible boss and treats her like dirt, the sweet little girl isn’t very sweet and has an attitude problem. The only person in this house she can relate to is the husband Andrew.

When Millie takes the job, Nina is ecstatic and takes Millie to her new room. It is small, very small but better the sleeping in her car, which is what she has been doing for the past month or so. The only weird thing is the lock is on the outside, but Nina explains this used to be a storage facility. Millie then noticed scratches near the door on the wall…she has no idea what happened in that room before she was hired, the horrors she is about to face and that NOTHING is as It seems.

This book will leave you shaken, terrified, disgusted and at the same time wanting more. I couldn’t help but keep reading despite the revelations that come and it will have you thinking the worst about those seemingly perfect spouses.”

NAss “I didn’t read The Housemaid, I inhaled it. Who’s gaslighting whom? I felt like I was inside that Ingrid Bergman movie constantly switching my emotions as McFadden toys with clues that are not readily picked up. But it all comes together in the end. Instead of alternating chapters back and forth between Millie and Nina, she delivers a complete sense of each character and the way she writes it is brilliant. The Housemaid does what many thrillers don’t – presents you with a “I don’t know who I am routing for anymore now.” The book from the very beginning had me invested with loyalty issues as if these are real people. There’s one scene where I started biting my nails and I haven’t done that since I was seven years old. My heart was palpitating with fear as if I suddenly escaped into the book and became that character. Terrified. I won’t tell you who or I’ll spoil it for you. There are twists galore-so many and then Freida McFadden does what she does best- she leaves the best for last –yes up until that very last line, be on your toes and keep the lights on. 5 stars+”

Ov REgan ““If I leave this house, it will be in handcuffs. I should have run for it while I had the chance. Now my shot is gone.” – Prologue, ‘The Housemaid’ by Freida McFadde.

I combined reading with its unabridged audiobook edition, narrated by Lauryn Allman.

Right from the above opening lines I was hooked.
This is one of those domestic noirs/psychological thrillers that I feel is best read ‘cold’, so just the barest of details.

After the Prologue we go back three months earlier.
The housemaid of the title is Millie, who has applied for the position of live-in housekeeper for the wealthy Nina and Andrew Winchester. Millie is on parole and really needs this job. No further details though as might be expected from this type of thriller and the Prologue’s teaser, things get quite complicated.

Most of the novel focuses upon the dynamic between these three adults, though there is also the Winchester’s spoiled nine-year-old daughter, Cecelia, to add to Millie’s torments. At her first meeting with ‘CeCe’ she thinks “I’d say there’s at least a twenty-five percent chance she’s going to murder me in my sleep if I get this job. But I still want it.”

With respect to the audiobook, I felt that Lauryn Allman did an excellent job of capturing the characters, especially the two narrative points of view, Millie and Nina. Her voice is quite mellow and very easy to listen to. I have enjoyed her narration on two other recent audiobooks.

Overall, one of the best, twisty, unputdownable psychological thrillers that I have read for a while. After such a positive experience, I plan to check out Freida McFadden’s earlier novels as well as look out for her future projects.”

Editorial Reviews

“It should be considered ‘one stop shopping’ for information on the perioperative management of pediatric surgical patients. Each chapter is short and succinct but provides the essential information in handbook style. … An additional highlight of this book is the comprehensive index, which is very well organized and allows the reader to easily locate the subject of interest. Throughout the book, information is presented in a manner appropriate for both trainee and seasoned clinician.” (Lynne R. Ferrari, Anesthesia & Analgesia, Vol. 123 (4), October, 2016). “The writing is clear and easy to understand. The book can readily be used and understood by students, faculty, residents, and fellows. The book is divided into three major sections that correspond to the traditional divisions of surgical care: preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative.” (Robert M. Arensman, Doody’s Book Reviews, June, 2016)

The 100 Cases series provides a novel learning and revision tool that works by guiding the reader through each clinical case in a highly structured manner. Each scenario provides details of the patient’s medical history and the key findings of a clinical examination, together with initial investigation results data for evaluation. The volumes are designed with the student in mind, and include features to aid self-directed learning, clinical reasoning and problem-solving.

Doody’s Review

“This is a nice review of some common cases that are typically encountered in pediatrics. The presentations are thorough and the answers are complete and thought provoking. This book certainly can be used as an addition to a comprehensive pediatric study program.”–Doody’s

User Reviews

I find the 100 cases series very useful for revising for exams at medical school. For each case, a summary of the history, examination and (if appropriate) investigations are given on one page, with a discussion of the case on the following page.If you plan on revising from this edition, I would suggest particularly looking up the guidelines for management for some of the cases.

Overall this is a comprehensive selection of cases covering many of the essential presentations and conditions that may come up in medical school exams. However, further reading of more in-depth textbooks would be essential to complement these cases. The series could be further improved by suggesting additional reading material at the end of each case.

Doody’s Editorial Review

4 STAR DOODY’S REVIEW!

“I highly recommend this as a clinical resource.”
“This is the 24th edition of a practical, clinically relevant reference for pediatric providers from the student to practitioner level. The book is well organized for use as a quick reference.
The purpose is to provide an up-to-date, clinically relevant, easy-to-use reference for pediatric providers. The authors and contributors have done an excellent job of fulfilling these worthy objectives.
Intended for pediatric providers from the students to practitioners, this book is also a practical resource for nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, medical students, residents, fellows, and attending physicians. It can be used as a quick resource, but it also provides some background and aspects of pathophysiology, although the primary focus is on diagnosis and management. The references are relevant and up to date.
This is organized to be a practical and easily accessible reference for clinicians at every level. I really appreciate the section on the essentials of diagnosis and typical features in each chapter section. The book is well organized and presents the most important and clinically relevant information.
The figures and charts are adequate for clinicians and the references enable readers to learn more about each topic.
The authors and contributors have worked very hard to provide a reference with an emphasis on diagnosis and management, while at the same time including some background and pathophysiology. I highly recommend this as a clinical resource.”
